Liturgy is Cool

A few years ago I might have been skeptical or leery about something like this... I was talking to one of my friends a while back and she was telling me how she had taken her son to the park to play and she observed a nun who was praying "while reading from a book." She told me that it "just looked so unnatural, why don't you just pray freely and openly and come before God as yourself - using your own words?"

And I would imagine a lot of people might feel that way.

But the liturgy of the hours is more than just praying traditional prayers or praying through scripture, it's about getting into a rhythm of prayer. When you pray the divine hours you are allowing the prayers to govern your time instead of just praying "whenever you feel like it."

Plus, praying through scripture has been happening since long before Christ. In fact, we know that even Christ prayed the scriptures. From the cross Jesus prays, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Which is a direct quote from Psalm 22. Praying or quoting the first line of a scriptural text was a way of "referencing" the entire passage. It was a way of saying, "I feel like this" or "remember this and what this teaches?"

And last, though praying the hours might feel like its weighted heavily in church tradition, well....that's because it is. And I think that's one of the bigger sellers for me.

I was reading somewhere about how the designers at Volkswagen decided to re-release the Beetle. And surprisingly enough it came about as a knee jerk reaction to the boom of the internet and the quick rise of technology. It seems that as each new year came and left, more and more people felt they were being thrust faster into the future. So designers and inventors started to see a rising trend in people gravitating towards things from the past. Suddenly "retro" was extremely in. So when Volkswagen was trying to come up with an idea for a new compact car in 1998, they decided to redesign the Beetle. One year later it was named "Import Car of the Year" by Motor Trend.

Not surprisingly we are seeing this same movement in the younger church. As modern church tried to make the Sunday service streamlined and more like going to the mall. Young hipsters started to move more towards all things traditional. As big mega churches began stripping away all forms of iconography, stained glass windows and pretty much anything that looked "church-like," young people began frequenting churches that not only "felt" like church, but "looked" like church as well.

Believe it or not... liturgy is cool.

So going back to me... this Christmas, to help me get back into a season of quiet time, I picked up Phyllis Tickle's Christmastide. This was a great tool to help me go through the weeks of advent and epiphany using scripture, hymns, poems and the traditional readings of the "retro church." For those of you who already own Phyllis' Winter Liturgy of the Hours, you don't need to pick this up as the readings are the same.

Great Book

The Christmastide book is the perfect book to use for those who are starting to learn about the Liturgy of the Hours. We used this book at my parish throughout the Advent Season before weekday morning mass. We have since adapted to the regular morning prayer, but this book is a great way to start before going to the full version. I would recommend this book to anyone! The only con is the small print.

disappointing in Kindle format

I was extremely disappointed in the Kindle format of this book. It has almost no table of contents, and the different days for prayers are not numbered, delineated by weekday, or anything. For example, you cannot look for "First week of advent", or "Monday" or anything like that. There are just a bunch of prayers run together in sequence: morning, daytime, evening, morning, daytime, evening. How can anyone find the prayer for the right day of advent when there are no date markings or references of any kind? In contrast to the Pocket Edition of the Divine Hours, by the same author which has beautiful formatting and is easy to use, this book is totally unusable.

By putting discrete perspectives into historical context, the book circumnavigates through comparative and comprehensive holistic approach to the Siad Barre regime to reveal how colonialism did not produce less than what criminalisation of the State resulted in Somalia. This empirical analysis is crucial to understanding the contemporary conundrum facing the Somali world today. The argument is that the contemporary conflicts are not only attributable to—but also because of—the past plunders of the post-colonial leaders trained by the departed colonial authorities. Employing nuanced analytic concepts and categories, the aim of the book is to refine the past to recapture the present and envision the future. Framing new ways of analyzing military regimes in Africa begins with (re)assessment of how the Siad Barre regime was previously approached. Marshalling extensive and extraordinary amount of sources, the book unveils the intricacies and contradictions of the dictatorship and its impact on the Somali psyche. The book locates the evolution of the regime within the wider context of the Cold War political contestation between the East and the West. Unparalleled in-depth and analysis, this book is the first full-length scholarly study of the Siad Barre regime systematically explaining the politics and process of the dictatorial rule. The historicity of exploring Somali State trajectory entails employing a Braudelian longue durée approach. Thus, three interrelated sets of contexts/questions inform the study: how Siad Barre himself came into power, how he ruled and maintained his authoritarian reign over the Somalis and who had assisted him from inside and outside the Somali world.

bizarre page-turner

A strange dark comedy, "Body" is the story of a small-town Southern hick transformed into a bodybuilding superstar. "Shereel Dupont" is everything Dorothy Turnipseed was not -- sophisticated, admired, perfect. But although she could mold her physique, unfortunately she could never change her pedigree. And when the Clampet-esque Turnipseeds show up at the Ms. Cosmos contest to root for their hometown gal, all hillbilly hell breaks loose. The bizarre characters in this novel are remniscent of the wacky creations of Carl Haaison, yet they bear a disturbingly creepy familiarity to real people. The narcissistic Shereel, the steroid-monstress Marvella, and the bullying trainers -- every gym rat has met these folks. The eccentric, socially-inept kinfolk, an embarrassing reminder of a former forgotten life... And the brooding redneck boyfriend whose violent Vietnam past is constantly on the verge of eruption... Thanks to Crews' absolutely brilliant writing, these characters are real and their antics believable. I couldn't put this book down. The fastpaced plot careens wildly and often uproariously toward an unexpected, twisted climax. "Body" is out of print, as are many of Harry Crews' works -- a shame really. He is a truly unique author.

Not his best, but his funniest

"Body" tells the story of the fiercely fought annual body building competition, that takes place at a Miami Hotel. The two main characters are Shereel Dupont (born as Dorothy Turnipseed), and her slave-driving, borderline sadistic manager/trainer Russell Morgan (a/k/a Russell Muscle). That Shereel will prevail in the middleweight division (114-124 lbs) is a foregone conclusion, but, to win the coveted title of "Ms. Cosmos," she must beat the 156 lbs. of pure muscle, steroid-enhanced, Marvella Washington, who she has faced a few times before. According to Russell, winning is everything, anything else -- whether it be second or last place -- is utter failure, and, unfortunately, Shereel buys into this.

What makes "Body" unique and hilarious, is the introduction of Shereel's eccentric southern family (parents, two brothers, and one sister) and psychopathic, Vietnam Vet, knife wielding boyfriend, known as "Nail Head." Their love and affection for Shereel is unwavering, even if they're uncertain as to exactly what she's doing. In a bizarre sub-plot, Shereel's portly sister Earline, and a male bodybuilder nicknamed "Billy Bat" (he has the best back in the world) fall in love, and have a sexual encounter that only Harry Crews can dream up. Russell is going out of his mind trying to prepare Shereel for the contest, while simultaneously containing the Turnipseeds and Nail.

In the meantime, Marvella's trainer, Wallace "The Wall" Wilson, has his own hands full with Marvella's four shucking and jiving sisters, all with names that rhyme, and all potential champions in their own right. Until the shocking ending, there are a number of passages involving the families of Shereel and Marvella which will have the reader laughing out loud.

What I especially like about "Body" is how Crews describes the best and worst sides of athletic competition. At best, this body-building competition bridges the gap between people of all different races, religions and cultures. The differences between the bodybuilders are irrelevant in the face of the universal desire to compete and win. The racist attitudes of some of the characters are shown to be utterly absurd. On the other hand, Crews depicts the dangers of a win-at-all-costs attitude, whether through chemical enhancement, or the belief that even coming in second place means complete failure.

Although I thought that "The Knockout Artist" and "A Feast of Snakes" were better Crews' novels, "Body" is his funniest work, and thoroughly enjoyable. Harry Crews writes in a completely unique voice, and I regret that he seems to have retired.

(Note: The character Russell Muscle appears in several of the author's other novels, as well).

Wonderful and Funny Novel

This is a really fun novel to read. It is a tragicomedy about a female bodybuilder who is competing in a major bodybuilding contest and has completely re-invented herself from a redneck to a hard as nails bodybuilder. Unfortunately her redneck family shows up and this threatens to destroy her image and her chances of winning the contest. And they are a bunch of nutcases indeed. Its a really great novel that is funny throughout yet does end tragically. It also touches on the issue of female bodybuilding direction and struggle of whether the women need to pump themselves full of steroids and get as big and muscular as possible or whether they should stay drug free and stay more feminine looking. It is a real struggle for female bodybuilders today and its great that the book does touch on that issue.

Anything that Clinton Anderson puts his name on is worth picking up!

I have many books and videos on horse training and techniques and by far and away Clinton Anderson always has something worth reading. In very clear and concise language he explains what you need to do in order to help a horse overcome a variety of issues which ultimately comes down to the horse being either spooky or disrespectful or both! His material covers a lot and helps everyone from the advanced trainer, the average backyard horseperson or the novice to be safer and more knowledgeable around horses. That translates to a much better union and relationship with your horse, which is the goal of most people who love their horses. We've all been there before..."Where wisdom ends frustration begins"! Ground Manners for Horses

Well illustrated. Very helpful. I use Clinton Anderson and Marty Roberts methods with my horses and am making quick progress with basic training. It all boils down to non-violence and spending a lot of time with your horses. No quick fix just proper ground training.
