Daniel Boorstin writes like a librarian

Daniel Boorstin writes like a librarian. He has a clarity of vision about the claims of those around him and in the materials that claim a place in the archives and stacks of the crucial institutions he knew so well. And he called it like he saw it. Journalism, in his view, was a power in the ongoing cultural life of the United States that was part truth, part fiction. It was predictable in its approaches, limited in its ability to find and report facts, and was subject to the whims of political, economic and social power. It was a messenger of good in a landscape of evil. And its life was hard. This is a must-read for anyone who loves the press. It's must-reading also for press-haters. And it's the kind of read that will make you think perhaps as never before about the importance of the press in a society prone to being enamored with itself and its pleasant fictions.

A packed short read

Considering this book is only 35 pages, it certainly packed a lot in.

There was plenty of descriptions about people and the scenery at the office party, which I didn't expect because of the length of the book. The banter between Richard, Scarlett and Alice was clever. If I hadn't of known the title of the book, I would have thought Richard's indiscretion would have been with Scarlett.

There were 4 sentences I didn't like in the whole book. These were:

"He thrust his tongue into her molten depths" (I don't think any woman would like to have her lady parts described as moulten depths!)
"She had a spiced, tangy flavour" (Never tasted a spicy tangy muff unless it's during crisp play lmao)
"Ughhh....so-so tight" (Tight is good isn't it?? Not ughhh)
"Withdrawing his softening arousal from her still vivacious channel" (Vivacious = attractively, lively and animated....clever pussy! And channel is just a no no lol)

They lost the book a star!

All in all, it was an enjoyable read and worthy of 4 stars just for the amount the author managed to fit in and that it was well written and flowed nicely.

2.5/5 Stars - The writing was great But the Plot was NOT for me.

I received this book from the author who requested I give a review and it goes without saying that I am nothing but honest. I will say that even with all of my brutal honesty I am not going to score something as unreadable (1 star) because I didn't like the plot but it will factor in equally with the writing. *shrugs* sometimes that happens with books - not everything is for everyone.

What I liked about the book - this was a short easy read and i mean short! It took me an hour, maybe even an hour and a half tops, to read this book. For just 35 pages there is a whole lot of detail and beautiful description to the story. In some places it could bog the reader down with just too much information but in the end, with it being so short, this worked out. I love that the Author set up his next book in the series at the beginning of the book. You don't realize this until the end BUT it makes so much more sense why there is so much information in the first part. The writing was easy to follow and I didn't find any randomly confusing sentences or anything like that which was nice. I also liked the fact that this spoke from a male POV - the sex, the drama, the way he described his life - it was all male. This was different and what made me curious to read the book in the first place. Speaking of sex, I liked that the sex scene was PURELY from the male POV it's not something I get the chance to read every day and it was refreshing.

What I didn't like about the book - The plot. :\ Yes, I was given warning of what could possibly happen JUST by reading the synopsis but gave it a try anyway. I was not pleasantly surprised at all, just disappointed. The plot itself is the reason this is a 2.5 star review. I was really going to rate it at 1 star BECAUSE of the plot but didn't think that would be fair of me simply because I disliked the story.

deliberate adultery

Note: the babysitter is 21, deliberate adultery

As much as I enjoyed the eloquent writing style with this setting and story the narrative felt oddly out of place for me.
Also, there was far too much time spend to describe all settings, like the party - including the entire buffet - although the main character did leave just moments later, or both flats. I understand - now having finished this short - that the scene at the party was necessary for a foreshadowing of the next encounter of "Dick".

Then for a short there was far too detailed background information about all named characters. It would have fitted better if that book was longer, especially because all that knowledge about the characters didn't help me to build a connection to them.
Even worse: none of the characters were really likable to me.

The erotic scene where the story was working towards was very well described, a little repetitive, but I couldn't really enjoy any of it. And that this story is obviously addressing a male audience - because I get that mane men fantasize about their babysitter - but because of the adultery. He neither has his wife's consent, nor is his marriage over. It's real plain adultery and he expects everything to continue and has - as stated - no guilty feelings. And I personally absolutely despise that.

I probably would have given this short four stars, I really was about to, but the character became aware about what he was doing and he deliberately continued and cheated on his wife.
And if this book was just a scene about a man having his awesome fantasy fulfilled in taking his kid's babysitter, I wouldn't have been so strict on everything. However, the narration of the book, obviously wants it to be regarded as more.

Finding commentaries on Proverbs and Ecclesiastes can be quite a task. Kathleen Farmer has put together a very good commentary on these two Old Testament Wisdom books. Her comments are brief but are comprehensive in scope. I'm glad to have it as part of our library.

This book was specially comissioned for the UK's Open University level three degree course of the same name (AA309). The course and the book takes the view that the relationship between Identity, Power and Status in the Roman Empire is all important in forming an understanding of the Roman culture.
Indeed exactly what was meant to be 'roman' is central to the course and the book. By trying to understand how the people of the Roman Empire saw themselves and others, we can get closer to the ordinary 'roman'. In fact the course suggests that throughout the Roman Empire period, most peoples of the conquered nations did indeed see themselves as 'roman' but also as celts, Greeks and Italians etc., different and similar to 'Romans in Rome' at the same time. Being 'roman' meant different things to different people at different times - there was not an uniform view, in fact 'roman' culture was a mass of varying forces and tensions pulling people in different directions at the same time. The best example of this is Philpappos who lived in Athens at the end of the 1st Century AD. He was a Greek and Roman citizen, a Roman Consul and Greek Archon and the dispossed ruler of a small kindom in Asia. He was therefore simultaneously: Greek, Roman and native Commagenian - all of these tensions were represented in his funeral monument. His status, power and idenity a complex package of three cultures intermixing at the same time. The book explores these tensions across many areas: Italy v. Rome, the Countryside v. City, Rome v. The Provinces and looks at the Roman economy, urbanization, religion and elite culture.
The Romans were obsessed with identity and status and took every opportunity to express it on inscriptions, funerary monuments and artworld. Status was a complex affair and legal, economic and family status intermixed. Wealth did not mean political power, unless you were a free citizen of Rome and even that was hard to detect in everyday life were it was possible for a slave to go unnoticed in the forums of the Rome cities as there was no 'uniform' for slaves. The essays explore these themes.
All of the contributors hold Phd's and work for the OU and other insitutions in the UK and the USA.
The level of writing is high, appropriate to a third/honours year of a degree and not for beginners.
Pictures and 'evidence' is by black & white photographes and well sourced, suitable for study.
The OU's approach to cultural history is one of evidence and the interpretation of it (such as it is for anicent history) allowing you to challenge Secondary Sources, through these essays. They are here to be explored and debated as well as learnt from.
One of the best complusory books I have had for a course.

Great, accessible introduction

The literature on the Roman Empire is vast and can make it challenging for nonspecialists to know where to start. This book is an excellent place to begin to get a clear picture of the Roman Empire from "inside" the perspective of people in the Mediterranean world.

Each essay takes up one facet of the imperial world, leading readers step-by-step into a clear picture. In fact, it is the pictures--both photos of ancient objects and reproductions of ancient art--which complement and enhance the text so well. Each essay also offers a nice, concise bibliography to allow readers to take the next step.

Would be useful for high school or college level courses, as well as for general reading.

You cannot ignore this part of the language: idiomatic expressions and more formal grammar should be given equal time. The lessons in this book are designed to teach you the kind of informal, everyday speech-including many slang words as well as idioms-that is commonly understood by all native Americans, no matter what their level of education.

There are various levels of idiomatic difficulty, and each group of lessons listed in the Table of Contents begins with the easiest lessons and ends with the more advanced ones. However, you may use them in any order you desire; each lesson is self-contained.

Each lesson begins with a dialogue, since idioms are best learned in meaningful verbal contexts. A vocabulary section then explains the idioms in clear, concise definitions. (Where the notation "neg." appears after an idiom, it means the idiom is generally used in the negative. For example, have the heart to (neg.) indicates the phrase is normally used in a negative statement such as "I didn't have the heart to tell her." Where alternate words are given in parentheses, either word may be used interchangeably. For example, down the drain (tubes) means you may say "down the drain" or "down the tubes."

One of the best!

It has a lesson per page, which consists of a sample dialogue that encompasses the idioms to be learned in that chapter, which are explained right away. You can use it to learn by yourself or in a classroom. Together with All Clear!, these two can really prepare you for daily English conversations.

Recommended if you're interested in everyday idioms

I'm not a native speaker of English but I took quite a pride in my English speaking ability... until I found this book. I thought I knew lots of colloquial expressions but I was wrong. I found that I knew about 5% of what was introduced in this book...

This book covers what is usually not covered in ordinary English textbooks. Those puzzling expressions you encounter in everyday conversations, you will find them here albeit not exhaustively. It was very helpful to me. And I believe it's going to be to you too. Good luck!

Love to teach idioms with this book!
