Treating these topics together takes advantage of all they have in common. The authors point out the many-shared elements in the methods they present for selecting, estimating, checking, and interpreting each of these models. They also show that these regression methods deal with confounding, mediation, and interaction of causal effects in essentially the same way.

The examples, analyzed using Stata, are drawn from the biomedical context but generalize to other areas of application. While a first course in statistics is assumed, a chapter reviewing basic statistical methods is included. Some advanced topics are covered but the presentation remains intuitive. A brief introduction to regression analysis of complex surveys and notes for further reading are provided.

This new edition provides a unified, in-depth, readable introduction to the multipredictor regression methods most widely used in biostatistics: linear models for continuous outcomes, logistic models for binary outcomes, the Cox model for right-censored survival times, repeated-measures models for longitudinal and hierarchical outcomes, and generalized linear models for counts and other outcomes.

In the second edition, the authors have substantially expanded the core chapters, including new coverage of exact, ordinal, and multinomial logistic models, discrete time and competing risks survival models, within and between effects in longitudinal models, zero-inflated Poisson and negative binomial models, cross-validation for prediction model selection, directed acyclic graphs, and sample size, power and minimum detectable effect calculations; Stata code is also updated. In addition, there are new chapters on methods for strengthening causal inference, including propensity scores, marginal structural models, and instrumental variables, and on methods for handling missing data, using maximum likelihood, multiple imputation, inverse weighting, and pattern mixture models.

About the Author
The authors are on the faculty in the Division of Biostatistics, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, and are authors or co-authors of more than 200 methodological as well as applied papers in the biological and biomedical sciences. The senior author, Charles E. McCulloch, is head of the Division and author of Generalized Linear Mixed Models (2003), Generalized, Linear, and Mixed Models (2000), and Variance Components (1992).

Very Good Explications + Analytic Explanations

Overall a very excellent, broad yet detailed overview of regression and statistical methods for parsing meaning and substance from different epidemiologic and/or other health-related investigations. One caveat: the writing is extremely verbose and geared toward analytic, mathematical parsing of meaning in context of data graphical overlays. Can be understood by any functional graduate student with robust quantitative skills, but is still a bit awkward/stilted in how the information is conveyed with numbering of tables, graphs, etc., in reference to textual explanations. Other than that, kudos. Very helpful.

About the Author
Eric van der Vlist is an independent consultant and trainer. His domain of expertise includes Web development and XML technologies. He is the creator and main editor of XMLfr.org, the main site dedicated to XML technologies in French, the author of the O’Reilly books XML Schema and RELAX NG, and a member or the ISO DSDL (http://dsdl.org) working group, which focuses on XML schema languages. He is based in Paris and you can reach him by mail (vdv@dyomedea.com) or meet him at one of the many conferences where he presents his projects.

Alessandro Vernet has been involved with web and XML technologies from day one. Prior to co-founding Orbeon, he worked at Symantec Corporation as part of the VisualCafe team, working on the next-generation RAD for web applications. He is the co-author of The Best of Java, received the 1998 Logitech Award for his master’s thesis on Jaskell, and is one of the architects of the open source Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS) project. His current interests lie in XML technologies and web applications. He recently implemented an XForms engine using Ajax/JavaScript, co-authored the XML Pipeline Language specification published by the W3C, and is active in two W3C Working Groups: the XForms and XML Processing Model Working Groups. He holds an MS/CS from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Erik Bruchez has extensive experience in the software industry as a software architect and consultant. As a former employee of Symantec Corporation, he contributed to the VisualCafe for Java product line. In 1999, he co-founded Orbeon, Inc. (www.orbeon.com), where he is now an architect of Orbeon PresentationServer (OPS), an open source web platform for form-based applications that builds on technologies such as XForms and Ajax. Erik participates in the W3C’s XForms and XML Processing Model working groups. He is the author of articles about web applications and XML technologies and has been a speaker at conferences such as JavaOne, ObjectWebCon, and XTech. Erik holds an MS/CS degree from the Swiss Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He spends most of his time between Switzerland and California and can be reached by email at ebruchez@orbeon.com.

Joe Fawcett started programming in the seventies and briefly worked in IT after leaving full-time education. He then pursued a more checkered career before returning to software development in 1994. In 2003 he was awarded the title of Microsoft Most Valuable Professional in XML for community contributions and technical expertise. He currently works in London as senior developer for FTC Kaplan Ltd, a leading international provider of accountancy and business training.

Danny Ayers is a freelance developer, technical author, and consultant specializing in cutting-edge Web technologies. His motivation is the belief that with a little encouragement, the Web can be significantly more useful and interesting than it is now. He’s been a blogger for some five years (http://dannyayers.com), with a tendency to post material relating to the Semantic Web or cat photos.

Technical Editor Micah Dubinko is an experienced software architect and writer working for the Mobile Platform group at Yahoo! Inc. He has been programming since the third grade—at the time on a computer with only 2K of memory. Here we go again, another book from Wrox press written by multiple authors from multiple disciplines. Professional Web 2.0 Programming is another deception for me in that it only provides high level details about web 2.0 and the book contains several chapters of subjects already mentioned over and over again in other books already. Let's start with Chapter 2. Here we have an overview of HTML, CSS, XHTML and DOM. I mean, why is this mentioned here? Is this a WEB 2.0 book or Web 1.0 book? Chapter 3 is about JavaScript and Ajax. What a waste, I already have a JavaScript book no need for half a chapter on JavaScript undefined objects. The other half is about high level design philosophies about Ajax. If this is what is referred to as a professional book on programming I'm really disappointed. Chapter 5 is a rehash of XSL with a mix of SVG. Chapter 6 is a waste of time about rich client applications providing little value to the reader. Chapter 7 is a rehash of the HTTP protocol URI. Chapter 8 is a rehash of XML. Chapter 9 talks about Syndication. Ha! Finally 15 pages worth of WEB 2.0 information via a high level definition of the RSS format. Chapter 11 is about web services, a rehash of other books on the subject.

A little bit of everything leads to nothing

As per the other reviewer, this book uses one chapter for each topic: eg. HTML/CSS, Javascript, Design Principles, and sometimes not even a whole chapter eg, Chapter 5 includes SVG, XSLT, XPATH, XFORMS, and the discussion about HTML 5 and XHTML 2.0.

Each section only really makes sense if you are already familiar with the topic. If you are familiar with the topic, then the relevant section will only bore you. The areas where you are not so familiar will confuse you.

It seems this book is an attempt to explain Web 2.0 technologies in a really short sharp fashion, from the beginning. Unfortunately, each topic is worthy of its own book. Shrinking 10+ books down to one doesn't work very well.

However, I do think an advanced book that assumes knowledge of these technologies and explains how to integrate them together would be cool.

Terrible book

Basically this book will hardly teach you anything you don't already know. They assume prior knowledge about almost every single topic they cover. They say in the preface that this book is not about java-script DOM, XML, AJAX or any specific technology for that matter. This book is more like some overview of all the technoligies that are used in Web 2.0 sites but none of them are explained in a way that someone without prior knowledge would understand. This book may only be useful for you if you are an experienced web developer with thorough knowledge in both backend and frontend technologies and just looking for some better practices and tips.
Unfortunately there aren't so many people that fit that description.

A Fine Veronese Contribution

This volume is the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition of the same name at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida (December 2012-April 2013). Most of Veronese's greatest works are frescoes or enormous canvases decorating walls and ceilings in Venice, and they must be seen there, since they are far too large to be transported. But, as Virginia Brilliant, Curator of European Paintings at The Ringling and editor of the catalogue, points out, the range of examples of Veronese's art that can be assembled for an exhibition is quite broad enough to support a survey of his oeuvre as comprehensive as this one is. Surprisingly, it turns out that Veronese is so well represented in North America that this entire show of paintings, drawings, and prints could be put together from twenty-six public and some private collections in the US and Canada. Even more surprisingly, Sarasota turns out to be a logical place to mount a major Veronese exhibition, since it is home to a number of important canvases, including the most celebrated "Rest on the Flight to Egypt" (1572, the cover illustration), which was John Ringling's first purchase for his new museum--and his most fortuitous, it having been deaccessioned in 1925 from Munich's Alte Pinakothek in the mistaken belief that it was in fact by Veronese's son Carletto. That erroneous misattribution is a result of the circumstance that is the central thesis of this exhibition: that Veronese's work cannot be judged truly except in the context of his workshop productions. What is wholly autograph, what only partly so and what is mostly or even entirely workshop product is a vexing question in all Venetian bottega painting, but perhaps especially so in the case of Veronese, who ran one of the tighter organizations of the sort. It is illuminating and instructive to follow the experts' reasoning as they analyze the paintings and tease out the varying contributions.

There are seventeen diverse scholarly essays by thirteen writers, some of whom (among them David Rosand, Frederick Ilchman, and John Garton) are familiar from recent Veronese studies. They range in topic from the artist's education in the workshop tradition and the organization of his own workshop to the iconography of his religious paintings to special studies of his drapery effects, a technical examination of his materials and techniques, etc. I found almost all of these pieces to be interesting and informative. There are seventy catalogue entries supported by eighty-seven companion illustrations and several detail studies, making the catalogue a much broader pictorial survey than the exhibition. The reproductions are for the most part sharp and in excellent color; the saturation of the jacket illustration is fairly representative of the whole. The apparatus includes an exhibition checklist with pertinent curatorial data, provenance, and selected references; a chronology of the artist's life; a bibliography of works cited; and a comprehensive index. This is not a huge volume (288 pages), but it is excellently edited, beautifully produced, and a substantial contribution to the literature on Veronese.

About the Author
Poet David Whyte grew up with a strong, imaginative influence from his Irish mother among the hills and valleys of his father's Yorkshire. He now makes his home, with his family, in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

The author of seven books of poetry and three books of prose, David Whyte holds a degree in Marine Zoology and has traveled extensively, including living and working as a naturalist guide in the Galapagos Islands and leading anthropological and natural history expeditions in the Andes, the Amazon and the Himalaya. He brings this wealth of experience to his poetry, lectures and workshops.

His life as a poet has created a readership and listenership in three normally mutually exclusive areas: the literate world of readings that most poets inhabit, the psychological and theological worlds of philosophical enquiry and the world of vocation, work and organizational leadership.

An Associate Fellow at Templeton College and Said Business School at the University of Oxford, he is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, where he works with many European, American and international companies. In spring of 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Neumann College, Pennsylvania.

In organizational settings, using poetry and thoughtful commentary, he illustrates how we can foster qualities of courage and engagement; qualities needed if we are to respond to today s call for increased creativity and adaptability in the workplace. He brings a unique and important contribution to our understanding of the nature of individual and organizational change particularly through his perspectives on Conversational Leadership.

For a practical book it certainly lacks images

I was expecting diagrams, photos or at least some drawings, but no, only text. That is a shame. Every single woodworking book I have ever own had visual cues that could help me understand the concepts being discussed. English is not my maternal language and sometimes is difficult to understand the use of certain words. A few images here and there would have been very helpful. Other than that it covers several subjects and will be somewhat helpful if you have experience in the area, if you are a novice find another book.

A boy and his binky

Sweet rhyming book about a boy and his binky. Growing up is hard to do, and young Danny has to make a change in his life. Mommy says it's time to retire his binky, his pacifier.This book works, because the decision on how to do that is left in Danny's capable hands He carefully considers his options and choses the one that makes the separation easier for him. Cute books about growing up, the pain and joy of letting go and taking that giant step into the next exciting stage of life.

Author Maya Shanie describes herself as a `Passionate Author of Children's Books', and though this is the first book of hers this reviewer has read it sets a fine precedent for a successful career for Maya. She is obviously a children's champion, as she believes that children's boos touch a young delicate hearts, and therefore she consults with child psychologists over each book she publishes. She writes with a uniquely charming rhyme style that is beguiling and one that children will hear as music.

Danny is a young happy boy who is able to dress himself, eat on his own, but his best friend is his binky. On the night of his birthday his loving mother expresses her feeling for Danny and tells him it is time to say goodbye to his binky. But Danny confesses he really loves his binky and he doesn't know how he will get along without it. But after falling asleep Danny he awakens and his binky is alive! His binky has a plan for helping Danny grow up: he asks Danny to send him via a heart shaped balloon into the sky to meet friendly birds and be happy. But Danny is afraid he will not see his binky again, so his binky asks to be planted with seeds so come spring he will blossom into flowers. Danny is still reticent, so binky comes up with a great idea - give he binky to a new baby girl, but Danny feels the baby girl will have her own binky and he will never see his binky again. His binky is frustrated and instructs Danny to look in his heart to find a way to see his binky once a day, so on his own Danny decides to place his binky in a flowering tree so every day Danny can see his binky in his very own tree - a decision that makes his parent proud of their young growing boy.

Not only is the story entertaining for children (the wise use of magic succeeds well), but is also is a helpful guide for parents who are coping with the universal problem of weaning children off pacifiers. Danny Wants To Be A Big Boy

Danny is a lucky little boy. He just had a birthday, and he has a loving mother who knows that Danny wants to be a big boy. Danny loves his binky very much, it has been a security for him. But now he wants to be a big boy.

The author, Maya Shanie, wants to share her love of books and children by writing about and helping children. Her books are written in rhyme which is the most fun. Parents/teachers love reading to children, and one of the best methods is reading and listening to rhyme. The lilt of the words gives power to them.
