Culture and Enchantment, by Mark A. Schneider

Max Weber viewed modern life as disenchanted, an arena from which scientific inquiry had banished magic. In contrast, Mark Schneider argues intriguingly that enchantment—the sense that we are confronted by inexplicable phenomena—persists in the world today, although it has shifted from the natural to the cultural arena. Culture and Enchantment shows that students of culture today operate in social and intellectual circumstances similar to those of seventeenth-century natural philosophers. Just as Newton was drawn to alchemy, scholars today are fascinated by ghostly and mercurial agents thought to account for the meanings of cultural entities.

For interpretive disciplines, Schneider suggests, meaning often behaves behaves as mysteriously as the apparitions pursued by centuries ago by natural philosophers. He demonstrates this using two case studies from anthropology: Clifford Geertz's description of Balinese cockfights and Yoruba statuary, and Claude Levi-Strauss's analyses of myths. These provide a basis for actively engaging disputes over the meaning and interpretation of culture.

Culture and Enchantment will appeal to an interdisciplinary audience in anthropology, sociology, history, history and sociology of science, culture studies, and literary theory. Schneider's provocative arguments will make this book a fulcrum in the continuing debate over the nature and prospects of cultural inquiry.

Review

Cindy Weber’s International Relations Theory is an extraordinarily au courant text in terms of both its theoretical attunement and its attention to genre. While many IR texts fail to heed the pedagogical value of incorporating innovations in visual technologies and culture, Weber’s does so with nuanced presentations and interpretations, which she articulates skillfully with the text’s theoretical treatments. It is an outstanding resource for courses in international relations/studies.

Michael J. Shapiro, University of Hawai’i, Manoa, USA.

Cynthia Weber's new edition is good news for all of us - teachers and students. She manages here to enliven IR theories by making us all think afresh about the stories we tell ourselves and each other about international politics, and to take a closer look at the lessons we imagine our favorite stories yield.

Cynthia Enloe, author of Seriously! Investigating Crashes and Crises as If Women Mattered.

About the Author

Cynthia Weber is Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex. She is author of several books and numerous articles in the field of International Relations.

A must have for anyone interested in a critical understanding of international relations theory.
By Ryan Mahmoud
This book will teach you how to critique mainstream international relations theory. It will teach you how to uncover hidden ideologies or "myths" that form the basis of theories. The book ends with a bold critique of ethnocentric influences of modern theories.

Well done!

Cynthia s investigation is one of those rare studies that will put IR theory into perspective for all with an interest in world affairs and how it is depicted on the silver screen.

Review
"A breathtaking read." Joburg.co.za (South Africa)

"It could have been the kiss of death‹to be described as the next John
Grisham‹but so far Mark Gimenez has dodged the bullet.  The Texas lawyer has
quietly carved his own path, seemingly unworried about any expectations
triggered by his debut thriller making the New York Times bestseller list.
He writes legal thrillers‹good ones.  His latest novel, The Governor's Wife,
however, is not set in a courtroom but rather the governor's mansion in
Texas and the no-man's land on the border of Texas and Mexico.  His hero is
not a smart, quick-stepping lawyer but a jaded governor, set for life in his
home state but who hankers after the adrenaline rush of one more political
adventure, a tilt at the White House. . . . Gimenez's dialogue breathes
street cred, his characters are larger than life, almost bigger than Texas,
but it is the state itself that is pivotal.  His books exude Texas.
Violence hovers like the acrid whiff of gunpowder after the fatal shot.
Here it explodes into massacre and betrayal in the raw world of illegal
immigration, drug cartels and politics." Dominion Post Weekend (New
Zealand)

"Mark Gimenez delivers another powerful thriller with his latest release The
Governor's Wife. . . . Gimenez has built a solid reputation for being a
skilled storyteller and in this latest release he kicks things up a notch,
intensifying the action, increasing the emotion and going all in with a plot
that twists and turns, and creating multi-layered, captivating characters
that are impossible not to care about." Houston Press

"Here's a heady mix of drugs, sex, politics and gunfights played out in a
modern Texas, a big tale that gallops along at mustang pace. . . . Mark
Gimenez already has a reputation as a fine thriller writer and doesn't
disappoint here." The Courier-Mail (Australia)

"The no-man¹s land hugging the Mexican border with the United States forms
the pivotal area for plot. An ambitious politician; his estranged wife; a
scheming political advisor; the politician¹s mistress; a missionary doctor,
ruthless lobbyists and a vengeful Mexican drug lord, the story has all the
elements in their best to keep you turning pages. . . .The biggest player,
history, is least mentioned but is the most powerful driving force. The
Governor¹s Wife is a reflection of the distribution of good and bad within
us. Each character is carefully constructed with enough attention paid to
detail to ensure the seamless flow of the story without compromising on the
suspense. Each of them is faced with difficult choices as their personal
lives are intertwined with bigger affairs in the making."  -- Postnoon
(India)

"An intense, exciting read." - The Citizen (South Africa)

"The State of Texas is a world unto itself, and nowhere is more grimly
fascinating than the corridor of badlands where the Lone Star meets the
Mexican border. . . . Here bestselling writer Mark Gimenez takes on the
Grisham mantle with a politico-legal-romantic thriller that fairly whips
along. . . . You can see the movie coming a mile away, and it¹ll be a
cracker." The Melbourne Review (Australia)

"As the Governor of Texas, Bode Bonner has it all but a ticket to the White
House and a wife willing to play second fiddle to his rapidly expanding
ambitions. . . . Just as the cut-throat tactics set the pace for a final
showdown, the unexpected depth presented by both governor and wife makes for
a compelling, if slightly unusual, love story."  - The National (Dubai)

Yet another GOOD one from Mr. Gimenez
By Jason Frost
Mark Gimenez is easily one of the quietest authors out there. He doesn't have a FaceBook, Twitter, and his website is pretty regular. I've eMailed him a few times and he has graciously responded, but he's not a "talker". So that's why I was surprised to see that he had a "new" book out... and it's been out since November. Whhaaaatttt!?!?! I go after books like I buy iPhone apps; 100 pure impulse I usually buy what I don't need. The difference here is that I NEED to read Mark. Every author after a while usually puts out a book that is good but not great. After six books, Mark has yet to do so.

This man is one hell of a magnificent writer!

And this is one hell of a book!

Let me address one thing first before I get to this book... there is a review on here that isn't entirely true. While I will admit that this book is HEAVILY political (especially in the beginning), but a "liberal political diatribe about the evils of the establishment and the wonders of illegal immigration" it is not. I don't know where Mark's politics lie (and I really don't care) but I don't think it's possible to tell with this book. Oh you can speculate, but I would expect that you would only see it through your eyes. If you're a Conservative then you will see the hero in Governor Bode. If you're a Liberal then you'll see Governor Bode as the devil himself. If you're a booklover then you'll put all that ish aside and just thoroughly enjoy another book from Mr. Gimenez.

`The Governor's Wife' is a very, very, very, very good read. Bode Bonner is the governor of Texas and proud of it. (Come to think of it, have you ever met anyone who was from Texas and wasn't proud of it?) Anywho... he has the thankless job of having to deal with illegal immigration, drug running, re-election, hoping against all hope that his dream of running for President will somehow come to fruition, and keeping time with one extremely hot assistant. If Edward Lorenz thought that little butterfly did something, he needs to jump ahead in time to see what happens on John Ed's ranch. What happens there will infuriate some people, make some people cheer, and others (like me) wonder how long it will take before it hits the fan.

So Bode's dream of running for President becomes a reality... overnight. And he would be a shoe-in except for a few things: 1. the incident at the ranch 2. His wife 3. His extremely hot assistant 4. El Diabolo. Other than that it would be a breeze. Mark has always had the ability to write a complex plot with his stories, but he ratchets it up a notch with this book. You wonder how a poor doctor, Super PAC's, illegal immigration, assassins, toned co-ed butts (have mercy), and Irish wives can possible come together to create a story that makes sense. Well, Mark did and it does.

And still... for the life of me I don't know why the American publishers don't pick up this guy! I am glad to see that his books are available in e-format but I would love to carry his work (other than his first two books) in my bookstore. Getting excited about an author is par for the course when you love books, but STAYING excited about an author is what makes reading so much fun.

A terrific Texas political thriller
By Paul Mastin
I have read alll of Mark Gimenez's books, and have not been disappointed in one yet. His latest, The Governor's Wife, continues his streak of winners. As Gimenez's readers have come to expect, he pays close attention to setting the stage, bringing the story's locations alive. He develops the characters skillfully and draws the reader along, revealing just enough at just the right times, giving us people and a story to care about.

The governor in The Governor's Wife, Bode Bonner, bears an uncanny resemblance to our real life "governor for life," down to his connection to George W. Bush and his penchant for hunting small game while jogging (in self-defense, of course). There are plenty of biographical differences to avoid a defamation suit, but the personality is certainly inspired by Perry. (By the way, I couldn't help feeling like Gimenez is no fan of Gov. Perry!) While he is trying to figure out how to get noticed on the national stage, looking to follow in GWB's footsteps, his wife is bored and neglected, aware of Bonner's affair with his aide, and seeking meaning outside of photo ops and the public eye.

She finds satisfaction in assisting a doctor in the colonias along the border. Her training as a nurse and her compassionate spirit fit right in with the saintly doctor, who was born in the colonia, went to Harvard Medical School, and returned to the border to provide health care. She happens to assist in saving the life of the son of Mexican drug lord, then her husband happens to shoot the same son, leading the governor to the national stage he has longed for. At the same time, the Democratic party leadership think they've found the perfect candidate to oppose Bonner in the race for governor, a certain border doctor who happens to be falling in love with the governor's wife.

Gimenez weaves these connections into a believable, readable story, with, yes, some melodrama, but, hey, it's fiction! Throughout we're also treated to more political and social commentary than I remember in Gimenez's other books. Gimenez is pretty clearly a Democrat, but he gives enough time to the characters that other perspectives are treated fairly. I especially liked the Mexican perspective. As he conveyed the history of Texas and Mexico from the perspective of the Mexicans, he almost had me convinced that we should cede Texas back to Mexico. OK, not really, but it's interesting to hear their side of the story, too.

All in all, The Governor's Wife is a highly enjoyable, can't-put-it-down thriller. Highly recommended!

A political thriller - not as good as his other books
By Suncoast
Mark Gimenez is a talented author and I have really enjoyed his other legally targeted books. This book is more a political thriller, and IMHO not a very good or believable one.

There is great theatre in political thrillers set in the U.S. because the political and constitutional system is so complex and flawed that it allows authors a wide range of creativity. This time I think that Gimenez has gone too far with this creativity. While I am Australian, I closely follow U.S. politics because of the impact the US on the rest of the world, especially over the last very crucial 4 years.

The main character is a larger than life Republican Texas Governor with the ethics and morals of a tom cat, whose testosterone drives him to govern Texas like a cowboy from the Wild West. His political excesses and lies force his wife to move out of the Governor's mansion to make her mark on the world. She goes to work as a nurse on the border with Mexico where abject poverty goes side by side with the wealth and cruelty of the local drug cartel.

When hunting wildlife on a Texas billionaire's private ranch, the Governor's philosophy is expressed clearly - "Shit, let's kill something, see if that'll perk up our spirits." In the end he doesn't kill any game but instead kills 4 Mexicans youths tending a hidden cannabis plantation on the ranch who are about to rape a young Mexican girl. One of the youths is the son of the head of the drug cartel, who vows to kill the Governor in revenge.

Overnight, because of his actions, the Governor becomes a national hero and starts to believe that God has ordained that he could be the next President of the USA. His philosophy is "Buying control of the U.S. government is man's work, like coaching football and destroying the economy". During fundraising for PAC money for a Presidential campaign, a billionaire donor wants to know what he can get for his money - "I want to have sex with my mistress in the Governor's Mansion in the same bed Sam Houston slept in."

I am not questioning the politics involved (others who live in the U.S. are more qualified to do that), only the credibility and believability of the characters and the plot. It was very hard to rate this book. The writing put it near the 4 star level, but the story and crediblity put it at 2 star or below. Because of my respect for Mark Giminez as an author, I compromised at 3 stars.

Review
Novel by Alfred Doblin, published in 1929. It appeared in English under the original title and as Alexanderplatz, Berlin. It tells the story of Franz Biberkopf, a Berlin proletarian who tries to rehabilitate himself after his release from jail but undergoes a series of vicissitudes, many of them violent and squalid, before he can finally attain a normal life. The book is notable for its interior monologue (in colloquial language and Berlin slang) and somewhat cinematic technique. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

Danke sehr, Herr Einsiedler!
By Gio
Cyberfriendships are one of the bizarre artifacts of contemporaneity, but without the prodding of one of my "amazon friends", I might never have gotten around to reading Berlin Alexanderplatz, one of the beacon masterworks of 20th C literature. Alfred Döblin is one of several German and Austrian writers who have not captured the attention of English-language readers as much as they deserve. Others include Robert Walser, Joseph Roth, Arno Schmidt, and Siegfried Lenz. Döblin, born in 1878, was a physician who lived and practiced medicine in the working-class district around Alexanderplatz (Alexander Plaza) in Berlin for more than twenty years, ending with his flight from Hitlerism in 1933. In the USA, he worked for MGM, but after the war he returned to Europe. Uncomfortable with the social currents in Germany, eventually he spent the last years of his life in France. After some decades of neglect, his work has now become iconic in Germany, his popularity boosted by the massive 15-hour film rendition of Berlin Alexanderplatz by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Berlin Alexanderplatz is usually described as a "stream of consciousness" novel, the first to reveal the influence of James Joyce's 'Ulysses' in the German language. It was published in 1929, just a year before the American John Dos Passos published the first volume of his trilogy 'USA', also considered a seminal work of experimental fiction. If B-A is a "stream of consciousness" novel, however, it behoves us to ask whose consciousness is streaming. Unlike many such novels, B-A doesn't precisely trepan the mind of its principal character, Franz Biberkopf, to expose his flow of thoughts. Quite the opposite! This is a novel with an 'omniscient narrator' - a self-aware Schöpfer - and the consciousness streaming through its pages is the writer's own. And what a mighty stream it is! a Humboldt Current of history, mythology, religious iconology, front page news, gossip, weather reports, street-corner ranting and politics from right and left, the eternal and the ephemeral of German society all spewing over the life of the hapless "Everyman" Biberkopf. It is not, by the way, a jolly romp through the land of Bach and Goethe. It's a dark, almost revolting portrayal of the Lumpenproletariat - the under-class - of Germany in the years between the first act and the second act of the one and only Great War.

Seen from an older literary perspective, B-A is a "Totentanz" -- a Dance of Death -- or a Ship of Fools novel, a montage of the follies of mankind in which the fate of Everyman Biberkopf is analogous to the fate of Germany. Much of the 'stream of consciousness', in fact, dances to the tunes of old German nursery lullabies, army marching songs, and Lutheran hymns. This may be an obstacle for English readers, this rhythmic incorporation of song lyrics that have immediate allusive resonance for German readers but might not even be recognizable as such to Anglophones. For me, the swirling musicality of Döblin's prose was a major centripetal force, focusing my attention on the 'tale' of Biberkopf amid all the excursions and diversions of Döblin's consciousness, one moment recounting the tribulations of Job, another the trials of Odysseus among the Sirens, next a court transcript of an embezzlement, and then a drunken brawl between pimps. Without such a musical structure, A-P might have been a laborious book to read; as it is, I've found it as thrilling as wandering through an exotic, slightly dangerous, luridly sensuous carnival of life.

Best German Novel
By S. Foster
This is the best German novel; mordant, dark, hilarious, packed with the fascinations of Modernism and modern urban life... Joycean literary technique applied by a historical realist to the social life in one of the world's great cities at a critical turning point in its history, it's as close as the German novel can get to Rabelais, Brecht, Joyce and Dickens at the same time. Here's to Franz Biberkopf!

Non-Western Encounters with Democratization: Imagining Democracy after the Arab Spring, by Christopher K. Lamont, Jan van der Harst

Non-Western Encounters with Democratization offers diverse perspectives on democracy and transition spanning the Middle East and North Africa to East Asia. This unique collection of essays, drawn from contextually rich case studies presents readers with a variety of non-western encounters with democracy and provides important insights into the dramatic political and social transformations in these regions over the past decades. The book offers a deeper understanding of democratization and challenges the image of western democracy as a universal model to which non-western societies aspire. Taking the events of the Arab Spring as the starting point, international contributors look at why the uprisings that rapidly spread across North Africa and the Middle East had a strong resonance in East Asia but failed to inspire similar revolts. Through direct engagement with non-western experiences of political transition the book demonstrates a unique coherence across two regions relatively under explored in democratization literature.

Review
'This book offers an outstanding and detailed account of politics and analysis of how democratic principles should be achieved in the Arab world. Comparing democratic principles in the West and how to apply them in the Middle East provides valuable understanding, not just for those interested in politics, but also for scholars interested in international, comparative and constitutional law. It makes a valuable contribution to the heated debate on Islamic law and its role in designing new Arab constitutions.' Mohamed A. Arafa, Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law, USA 'Democracy as an ideal is universally embraced, but as a system of government providing political order, interest representation and collective decision making, it also faces serious tests. This timely volume provides thought provoking accounts on how a number of non-western countries and regions face up to such challenges.' Zhengxu Wang, University of Nottingham, UK
