Good book!

This book is well organized and concisely written. Each chapter stands on its own and can be read independently, which fits my style and allows for reading it as time permits. The chapters each contain some theory or explanation as well as copious amounts of code and real world examples. The use cases were also helpful in understanding situations where the design patterns could be implemented.

I purchased the eBook version which had links embedded in the text for additional detail and in-depth explanations on related topics. I like to explore as I read and learn, so this was a welcome feature.

The only con for me was that it's written for Python 3, however, the concepts apply to Python 2 and other languages. Eventually I will move to Python 3 and this was a gave me a chance to try Python 3.

I recommend if you want to learn about design patterns and you're a Python user.

New ideas to refactor and optimize your code

If you need to find new ideas on how to optimize or make your code more easy to interpret this book will give you several examples of code structures to make it more efficient or more simple to interpret. The book writing style is a bit dry and it's not for beginners(you need to know what python is about and how to code with it or you will get lost) but the core content is sound so if you know your stuff and you want to learn new coding styles this book is for you.

Read this if you need answers to help solve the medical crisis.

This is an excellent review of issues which affect individuals when they make medical and health maintenance choices. In today's environment of "the business of health care" it is wise to consider what happens to the patient when he or she leaves the medical clinic. Why do they take their prescribed medication? Why don't they return for their appointment? Do they have insurance? Did they call the doctor about their test results? All of these concerns are addressed very well within this publication.

While critical of the established medical community for its attitude toward natural healing, whose scientific basis he tries to explain with extensive references, he nevertheless combines conventional therapies with herbs, nutritional supplements, and lifestyle changes to achieve the best results. Yance covers many topics but not in enough depth to make this book useful for lay readers, except for the sample recipes and coverage of the natural ways to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy. The chapters on the chemical composition of herbs and supplements are more suitable for medical doctors, herbalists, and nutritionists. You need to read this.

A MUST read before you take any crazy harmful drugs if you have been diagnosed. Do your own research and tell your Dr. what you want. Don't ask him what you need. They know absolutely NOTHING for certain in the world of cancer except how to burn through bazillions of dollars under the guise of research.

I've bought many books about herbs over the last 30 years, and this one is the most comprehensive and written with the deepest knowledge.

A cooperative working relationship between "allopathic" physicians and "naturalists" is long overdue in my opinion, and my opinion ought to be worth something. I am a physician with 25 years experience in cancer medicine and I have board certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology, and radiation oncology. Mr. Yance's book is a step in the right direction, and I feel it is a worthwhile reference for any physician who is interested in the nutritional welfare of his patients. The book is far from perfect, however. For example, Mr. Yance overstates the risk of carcinogenesis from therapeutic radiation, presents site-specific side effects such as dry mouth as if they were general effects of radiation, underplays the value and effectiveness of radiation for common adult tumors such as breast cancer, and claims benefit for herbal or nutritional remedies for side effects of cancer treatment even when they have been shown to be ineffective in clinical trials. Administration of vitamin B12 and folate to prevent chemotherapy-induced neuropathy is the most egregious example. At the same time, glutamine is not mentioned for prevention of neuropathy though it is known to be useful, at least for prevention of nerve injury from vinca alkaloids.
Another problem is that much of the nutritional information is too technically advanced for most lay readers. One would have to know more biochemistry than the majority of phyicians to wade through the terminology.
Despite its shortcomings, I think Mr. Yance's book is a valuable resource and would recommend it to my medical colleagues. My advice to the general public is to go to the best source for information about cancer treatments. As a medical and radiation oncologist, I wouldn't try to inform my patients about nutritional therapies, and I sure wouldn't ask a nutritionist their opinion about radiation or chemotherapy. Discuss all the therapeutic issues with your main healthcare provider. If he or she won't discuss herbal, nutritional, and other alternative or complementary modalities, ask for other opinions.

About the Author

Edward H. Judge and John W. Langdon are professors of history at Le Moyne College, where they have team-taught for the last 20 years a two-semester world history course for first-year students as well as courses on modern global history for upper-level students. Judge earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan and spent a year in the USSR as an IREX scholar. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1978, was the college's scholar of the year in 1994 and was awarded the J. C. Georg Endowed Professorship in 1997. Langdon earned his doctorate at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Public Affairs, where he was a national defense fellow. He has taught at Le Moyne since 1971, directed its honors program and was awarded the O'Connell Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1996. Each has been named the college's teacher of the year and has chaired its department of history. They have written or edited eight books: three in collaboration with each other, three as individuals and two in collaboration with other scholars. They love teaching world history, especially to students of diverse backgrounds and interests, and they derive great joy from infecting their students with a passion and enthusiasm for the study of the human past.

Needed for school

I needed this book for school but didn't want to pay school price so I went to amazon and found this! What I didn't like about the book itself is that some of the information is confusing because some of the details are so subtle. You really have to read between the lines. I still recommend buying this book if you need it for class though. Even though the shipping is fast I don't recommend buying it at the last minute.

Honestly, I did not care for this textbook. I felt as though they jumped around too much. I am used to having key words with definitions on the side. It did read as more of a "book" which was nice. But i missed the traditional things an actual textbook brings.

Not only is this the first textbook I read cover to cover, but this is the first one I actually enjoyed reading. And the Kindle Version was great. Having the ability to search text is amazing.

Among the lost plays of which we have large fragments, The Searchers shows the god Hermes, soon after his birth, playing an amusing trick on his brother Apollo; Inachus portrays Zeus coming to Argos to seduce Io, the daughter of its king; and Niobe tells how Apollo and his sister Artemis punish Niobe for a slight upon their mother by killing her twelve children. Throughout the volume, as in the extant plays, we see Sophocles drawing his subjects from heroic legend. This is the final volume of Lloyd-Jones's new Loeb Classical Library edition of Sophocles. In volumes I and II he gives a faithful and very skilful translation of the seven surviving plays. Volume I contains Oedipus Tyrannus, Ajax, and Electra. Volume II contains Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, and Philoctetes.

The collected fragments of the lost plays of Sophocles

Only seven of the tragedies of Sophocles survive intact out of a list of 90 plays for which we have titles. All seven of the plays are from the later part of his career, which means that if we had as little of Shakespeare as we had of Sophocles all we would know of the Bard's work would be "Hamlet," "Othello," "King Lear," and "The Winter's Tale." That would still be enough to impress us today, but all we would have of the rest of his work would be titles like "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Julius Caesar" to go with fragments from plays like "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Romeo and Juliet," and "The Tempest." But if you have read "Bartlett's Quotations" rather than "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare" then you already know that "fragments" of Shakespeare can still be pretty impressive. It is in anticipation of finding similar gems that we approach this volume of the Loeb Classical Library containing "Fragments" of the work of Sophocles.

Edited and translated by Hugh Lloyd-Jones, "Sophocles: Fragments" is a collection of all of the "major fragments," which range in length from two lines to a substantial part of "The Searchers," a satyr play in which Hermes plays a joke on Apollo. There are also substantial pieces of "Inachas," in which Zeus comes to Argos to seduce the king's daughter Io, and "Niobe," which is the story of Apollo and Artemis slaying the daughters of Niobe for daring to insult their mother. Lloyd-Jones provides what we know about these lost plays to give readers a sense of the possible context for these lines (including other ancient plays and works that touch on the same characters and stories). Most of these fragments come from other ancient authors who were quoting these plays of Sophocles before they were lost, while others have been discovered on papyri in the past century. Most of these fragments are assigned to known plays (10-343), followed by those fragments that have not been assigned to any specific play (344-417), and a doubtful fragment that may or may not be from "Oeneus" (418-22).

Lloyd-Jones also did the translations for the first two Sophocles volumes in the Loeb Classical Library and as is the case with this entire library you have the original Greek text on the left-page and the translation on the right. Certainly it is frustrating to read bits and pieces, trying to connect the dots and imagine what these plays would have been like, and if I had the talent and the time I would love to be able to try and reconstruct some of these tragedies. Once you see how Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides deal with the same story, the murder of Clytemnestra by Orestes because of the happenstance that all three of their plays on that subject have been preserved, it is difficult not to wonder what Sophocles would have done with the story of Prometheus or Iphigenia. Obviously this last Sophocles volume is going to be of interest to only the hard core scholar of Greek tragedy, but given how little there is of the tragic playwrights in the first place, these fragments can be quite interesting.

How rare and wonderful it is to come across a collection of fragments by a great ancient Master!

This Loeb edition (from 2003) is essential for anyone who wishes to increase their understanding and love of ancient drama.

Presented and translated by the famous classical poet/scholar Hugh Lloyd-Jones, the edition uses up-to-date research and information on Sophocles. It is the only source to go to when it comes to all the unknown material Sophocles produced!

Not as thought-provoking, but better than If I Stay in many ways

First Sentence: Every morning I wake up and tell myself this: It's just one day, another twenty-four hour period to get yourself through.

How I Acquired the Book: Borrowed from my town's library.

The Review (with MINOR SPOILERS): I suppose I should start off this review by saying that Where She Went is very different from its predecessor, If I Stay. For the first half, Where She Went was very slow, dragged in the plot, and felt as if it were some new trashy teen lit. While I was reading the first half, I kept thinking, "Wow, If I Stay would be better if it had stayed alone." Where She Went certainly was not the book If I Stay was. In my opinion, although it didn't change mine, If I Stay had the potential to change people's lives. However, I can't say the same for Where She Went.

While I thought the ending of If I Stay was a very nice and sweet ending, obviously, some others did not, and that is, I suppose, what prompted Ms. Forman to write this book. Where She Went picks up three years after Mia's tragic car accident that killed her family, but not her. But this time, the story's told from Adam's point of view. In the three years that have passed, he has become a rock star. Mia, meanwhile, has reportedly become "the next Yo-Yo Ma."

That was one major complaint I had with Where She Went: the whole unrealisticness of it all. (Hey, is that even a word?) Seriously, how, after three years, are they both supposed to be ridiculously famous? The improbability of that really staggers me, and detracted a lot from my reading experience. Even Adam describes it perfectly on page 228: "It's just: Kim. You. Me. We all came from this nowhere town in Oregon, and look at us. All three of us have gone to, well, extremes. You gotta admit, it's kind of weird."

Yes, Adam, it is kind of weird. Therefore I have no idea why your creator would choose to make it so weird.

Moving on: One thing that really annoyed me in If I Stay was Mia's character. She was boring. Period. Adam is a totally different story. He's much more emotional, and much more interesting to read about. Mia, of course, is still quite boring, but now that she's in the third person, it's not quite as bad. I totally preferred Adam's voice to Mia's voice.

Where She Went, at the core, is absolutely a romance novel. Gone are the thought-provoking questions that If I Stay raised; welcome, character interaction and thoughts. I don't think everyone who liked If I Stay will like Where She Went, but I definitely liked this book better. For romance lovers and lovers of Mia and Adam, this book is a dream come true. While the first half was sluggish and unforgivable, the second half redeems this book.

I really wish Amazon would let us give half-star ratings, because I really want to give this book 3.5 stars, and this is a positive review, not a critical review. As a reference, I think If I Stay deserves 2.5 stars. So if If I Stay left you begging for more of Mia and Adam, read this. Your wish has been granted.

Better than "If I Stay"

I wonder if it is ok that I liked Where She Went so much more than its predecessor. I mean, If I Stay was all about people dying and lying in coma and there were hardly any tears in my eyes and here I spent hours sobbing over a guy's broken heart? Am I that much into emo guys?

Don't think that's the answer though. Super-emo Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls)'s Sam and Beautiful Creatures's Ethan didn't rock my boat and how could they with their obsessions over puffy coats, Scarlett O'Hara and leaky womb type poetry? Adam Wilde is emo of a different, Tom Mackee (The Piper's Son) kind. He is broken, messed up, hopeless, talented and he can love!

Adam's story was just so, so bitter. Throughout the book I felt that exactly like him, I was filled with pain and resentment towards Mia's decisions. The eventual release of all the pent-up anger (accompanied my uncontrollable sobs) was, I believe, as cathartic for me as it was for Adam. This book was a fantastic study of grief, loss and forgiveness. Beautifully, beautifully written.

Ladies, have you hankies ready for this one, 'cause I am tearing up again just thinking about it.

Why I Read this Book: This book is a must read for anyone who's read If I Stay. In fact, if you've already read If I Stay, chances are you been anxiously awaiting the release for the sequel. There was a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of If I Stay and if you're like me, you need to know what happens next. And you get that closure in Where She Went.

What I Liked: If I Stay was a great emotional and thought-provoking read. And because I was late jumping on the reading bandwagon (I didn't read that book until late last year), lucky for me I didn't have too long to wait for the answers that are found in Where She Went. If I Stay was first published in January of 2009, so some people have been waiting over 2 years for closure. Well wait no more, the time has finally come! Today is release day for Where She Went.

I really liked that this book was told from Adam's POV (1st person narrative). If I Stay was completely Mia's story; her traumatic experience, her story, her flashbacks. In Where She Went, we finally get Adam's side of the story; from back when Mia was in a coma from the accident until now, 3 years later. It was good to see where and how Adam and Mia each ended up 3 years after her tragic accident.

Adam pours his heart and emotions into his lyrics and shares them with the world. Every other chapter leads with a sampling of Adam's lyrics. Angst, torment and bitter emotions drip from his words.

One of my favorite lines (that accurately describes Mia's present journey) is Gran's theory on why Mia was afraid of butterflies when she was younger:

"She said it was because one day I was going to have to go through a metamorphosis like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly and that scared me, so butterflies scared me."

What I Didn't Like: Adam was a bit annoying at times with his whining. His character has had to grieve and he's had some growing up to do. He knows that Mia hasn't had an easy road but the void is not easy for him to digest.

Overall Impression: Where She Went is a great companion novel. I got the emotional read I was expecting and the closure I needed. Gayle Forman brings a wide range of emotions to these pages, even the raw and gritty kind, and sometimes they come in waves. Have the tissues ready.
