I was creating a scanned inventory of notgeld tokens in my possession and wanted to give them identification numbers out of some reference book or source. This book provided a useful set of numbers. It is actually a set of reprints from The Numismatist (1948-1960). Woodburn provided her supplements to Eklund’s original listing. It does not express price estimates or rarity, but they would be obsolete now anyway.
I found that at least two reprint issues are missing. Between pages 49 and 50 in Eklund’s main section there should be a listing of token numbers702 to 761 (between Heppenheim and Kaiseroda). Between pages 172 and 173 in Woodburn’s section there should be a listing of token numbers 2032 to 2059 (between Mollem and Saar).
Only a few tokens are illustrated and those images are too dark. However, the token descriptions throughout the book are excellent. The alphabetical order made searching for city names very easy. Using this book I was able to give identification numbers to 169 tokens and not to 9 tokens. There were 4 more tokens from Austria and Luxemburg that would not be in such a German book anyway. The book did not cover 13 porcelain tokens, only metallic ones, mostly zinc, some iron, and a few aluminum. I did not search for better reference books or Internet listings for the notgeld tokens as this book was sufficient for my needs.
