I'm an adult who needs to learn coding, starting with Scratch. This is an excellent resource for that as it clearly explains basic concepts as you make pictures and games. The title of the book is so ridiculous that I almost didn't buy it, and the great majority of the book focusses on Scratch with a little html website project at the end. However, I'm quite glad I got it. It's very clear and useful, and neither kids nor adults will feel talked-down to by the text even though it's aimed at younger learners. Coding Games in Scratch is the other book I'd recommend.

how to do all kinds of cool things

Bought this for my 7 year old granddaughter who is into coding. She loves it. She is learning how to do all kinds of cool things with her computer. she is trying to create a game now for herself and its coming along nicely, thanks to this book. Gives step by step instructions and is great if you are just getting started with coding. I recommend this for young and old alike. For anyone that wants to get into coding or just learn a little bit of "how to".

Romila Thapar specializes in early Indian history and is professor emerita in history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. In 1983 she was elected general president of the Indian History Congress and in 1999 a corresponding fellow of the British Academy. Her best known works are Ashoka and the Decline of the Mauryas, From Language to State, Interpreting Early India, and Time as a Metaphor of History: Early India.

Captivating

This was my first encounter with Lucretius, and I was reminded a bit of my first encounter with Euripides. That is to say, while both are clearly products of their time, there is also something distinctly "modern" about their works that make one easily forget they're reading works thousands (!) of years old. As I read De Rerum Natura, three distinct elements stood out to me--the poetry, the science, and the philosophy of the work--and so I will discuss each separately in order to better organize my thoughts in order to review this book.

First off, the poetry. While it is strange to the modern reader to read a book on science and philosophy in hexameter verse, the adjustment is made quickly and there is something compelling, rhythmic, and concise about this approach. Much of this is due to Lucretius himself obviously, but much credit also goes to Humphries for his elegant yet accessible translation. Even though the translation is now 40-odd years old, it has not shown its age in the way that some older translations tend to.

Then there is the atomistic science--"materialistic" in the literal sense, not the way the term is used colloquially--which at times is striking for its similarities with modern science, but more often striking for its departures. While the modern reader will have to slog through a number of assertions that seem a bit absurd when viewed with 2000 years of hindsight, the scientific foundation of "the way things are" is indispensable for the philosophical argumentation of the way things ARE. If you are like me, you might start to ask whether the inaccuracies contained in this "foundation" weaken the philosophical structures built upon it ... but personally, the only support needed to make the grander arguments work was the general materialistic argumentation, not the specific scientific "facts" themselves.

As much as I enjoy the poetic turns of phrase and the scientific musings, it is the philosophy at the heart of De Rerum Natura that makes this an unforgettable work, even now. The grace with which Lucretius built his own arguments and the way he reduced his philosophical rivals' arguments to absurdity is simply masterful. For me, the pinnacle of this work are the last 250 or so lines of Book III when Lucretius addresses the issue of death, having just argued for the materialistic nature of the body and soul. These are lines sure to "burn and bother" the reader, alternately inspiring fear and comfort of a type completely different from that found in religious doctrine. Materialistic, yet not nihilistic ... Lucretius will reward the reader who invests the time to dive into this fascinating and oddly captivating work.

A Visionary Epic Poem...

Blending science, psychology, and philosophy into an epic poem, Lucretius (ca. 99 BCE- ca. 55 BCE) explores the science of atoms, what we now call physics; hints at the principles of "natural selection"; and promotes the enlightened view of reason over superstition. Some of Lucretius claims are patently absurd to our modern ears, still much of his sounder thoughts paved the way for modern science and philosophy. Clearly he was a visionary, a man ahead of his time. Ovid, Cicero, Montaigne, and more recently, George Santayana, praised Lucretius, and yet not suprisingly, for centuries the Catholic Church denounced Lucretius as an enemy of religion and did their best to suppress his work. This incredible poem which seeks to understand our very beginnings in the cosmic universe builds a bridge between Lucretius' ancient world and our modern scientific civilization.

Humphries uses clear modern English that meets the challenges of Lucretius' poetry. His translation was nominated for the National Book Award in 1969.

Just a caveat for the Latin student...

This is a fine prose translation for those who wish to read Lucretius' poetry in English and learn about his philosophy. It is not, however, a very useful tool for the Latin student looking to make sense of Lucretius' language, which can be quite difficult at times. Humphries' translation is NOT very literal or faithful to the original Latin; in fact, there are many times when matching the English and Latin texts together is surprisingly difficult.
I would suggest this translation for those who aren't reading the poem in Latin, but for students of the language, look elsewhere - this translation will not be very helpful.

A great resource!

I found this book to not only be an interesting read but very informative too. It starts off as a guide for those who have never freelanced before but as you move on through the chapters it suggests that you have started your business and by the end it talks about the future.

It is a great book for those who are starting out at the very beginning but is also useful for people (like me) who have been working for themselves for a while. There is information on setting up a portfolio, what kind of person you need to be to be able to do this sort of work and has a big focus on those that work for clients.

For me, the best parts of the book were the profile interviews with other creative freelancers who are successful in their own business as well as the chapters on pricing, agents and balancing work and personal life.

The pricing chapter was particularly helpful to me, so much so that I actually wished I could hug the authors when I read it.

I also appreciated the chapter on finding an agent and whether that might be the right decision for you. The balancing of work and personal life (something I'm not that great at) was also helpful, especially from a standpoint from someone who's been-there-done-that.

The book is honest and funny at times and it doesn't make the world of freelancing sound like a whole lot of long lunches and never ending holidays, which I think adds to its usefulness. But it doesn't make it sound like a hell that you'll wish you never entered either. I will also note that while it is written for an American audience, other than the parts about becoming a business in a legal sense and the tax requirements, it seems pretty universal and certainly applicable to Australian and international readers.

I will be keeping this book close to hand so that I can refer to it over and over, I think it will be a great resource and I'm already considering buying another copy for a friend of mine who I think will benefit from it too.

Thanks to Meg and Joy for writing this resource, I think it's the kind of book that will stay relevant for years to come.

Great for established freelancers!

I haven't been freelancing for long, but I've been in the game long enough to not be too much of a newbie. I knew a lot of the nuts and bolts information about freelancing, but Creative Inc. was such a motivational help to keep me going strong! It's so nice to read a book on this topic without being discouraged about legal jargon and business plans galore! Creative Inc. is the perfect mix of detailed information and friendly advice. The interviews with a diverse selection of freelancers is also really encouraging. Everyone in the book really understands what you are going through and has been there themselves. I think this book is a great buy for any type of designer/creative looking to work for themselves. Hey, if you're stuck behind a cubicle, read this and it will certainly change your life.

Freelance Fantasy

This is hardly "the ultimate guide." If you're really wanting to freelance, this is fluff and fantasy. It's a cutesy book with some good information, but light on reality. One point not addressed was what one should do, and which happens if you don't get paid, and is rather important! Seriously if you want to get started, the book to get into is the Graphic Artist's Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, The Freelancer's'Bible, and/or join the Graphic Artist's Guild and/or AIGA. There are any number of books better than this. Fun to look at, but not very useful. Do NOT quit your job based on this book. Seriously disappointing.

It's time for Step Out, Allington Academy's annual community service project where every seventh and eleventh grader spends two weeks working for a non-profit organization.

Amy Flowers and her friends are all looking forward to it - with Mitchie, Kiwi, and Jenelle working at the Tranquility Garden, and Amy signed up for the Health On The Move Experience, which travels to different elementary schools to teach about health.

At least, Amy was looking forward to it, until she found out she was in it with annoying Preston and the Queen of Mean, Fiona.

Their supervisor, eleventh grader Anthony, is completely bossy, and Fiona starts off by refusing to do any work. Oddly enough, working with Preston turns out to be one of the best parts of the job, especially when he works with Amy to make "The Healthmobile" lessons a little more interesting. While Amy's friends start bonding over their projects, her own group is floundering, with Fiona fighting them every step of the way. When, after an argument, a surprising experience brings Amy and Fiona together, Amy has to wonder whether Fiona's sudden change of heart is for real...or just another one of her nasty schemes.

I haven't read the first two books in this series, but I had no problem falling right into this story and enjoying the characters. They're quirky and real without being stereotypical, and you can easily sense the history between them.

For middle school girls

Life for a seventh grader sure has its ups and downs. For Amy Flowers, the ups include great girlfriends and a few guy friends, too. The downs are all the messes she gets herself into, and of course, some catty opposition from ultra-rich Fiona and her followers.

The seventh grade community service project is looming, and Amy chooses to volunteer for the elementary school health education program. It doesn't hurt anything that Anthony, the tall, smiling boy leading the group, is serious hotness. Bus as it happens, drop-dead looks don't mean drop-dead niceness, and Anthony looks less and less dreamy the more he criticizes Amy and the other volunteers.

Weaving the ups and downs of relationships, the author is right on target with the voice, awkwardness, embarrassments and concerns of 7th grade girls. Well done.

I bought it used, but the quality was definitely acceptable. It was a great read for my daughter and a great addition to her collection.
