You can tell from the very first page that P. B. Kerr had great fun writing his novel, The Akhenaten Adventure. The way the author introduces his cleverly named characters, the atmospheric setting, the fun tone of his narration--all indicate that a hugely entertaining story is in store. The first installment of his Children of the Lamp sequence is set firmly in the present day, but it soon breaks away and encompasses several wonderfully colorful parts of the globe, England and Egypt included.

John and Philippa Gaunt, two twelve-year-old not-very-identical twins, live a privileged life on the Upper East of Manhattan with their wealthy parents and two curiously-mannered Rottweilers named Alan and Neil. The twins realize there's something amiss with their world when a string of strange things begin to happen after their wisdom teeth are extracted--they dream the same dreams, become stronger, their zits clear up, and wishes wished in their presence inexplicably come true. And, when their estranged Uncle Nimrod asks them to come to England for the summer during one such shared dream, the discovery of their destiny is set in motion.

John and Phillippa discover that they are descended from a long line of Djinn, have great inherent powers. They must call on these powers a lot sooner than they anticipated, though, because the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten is not as dead as history has so far declared and his legion of seventy magical djinn could tip the balance of power in the magical realm and affect the whole world order.

Grade 5-8–In this uneven fantasy, 12-year-old twins live a privileged but uneventful life in New York City until both John and Philippa need to have their wisdom teeth extracted. Afterward, the children begin to experience strange growth spurts, have cravings for smoke and heat, and gain the ability to grant wishes. After inviting them to visit him in London, their Uncle Nimrod informs them that they are descended from the Marid tribe of djinn. As he begins their training, they travel to Egypt, where they are pursued by Iblis, the leader of an enemy tribe who thinks Nimrod knows the location of the lost tomb of Akhenaten. This pharaoh bound 70 djinn to his service and whoever finds his tomb will have the ability to command them and shift the balance of power from good to evil. As they travel around the world, the siblings and their uncle have numerous adventures, culminating in an encounter with Akhenaten's ghost. The writing has a cinematic quality as Kerr provides detailed glimpses at the changing scenery; at times, there is too much description, particularly of room furnishings. In-depth characterizations are sacrificed for the often humorous, fast-moving plot. British thriller-writer Kerr puts an ingenious spin on the enchanted-lamp theme in his first novel for children, in which 12-year-old twins John and Philippa discover that they come from a preeminent family of djinn. Although their powers are not yet fully fledged (they're constantly forgetting whether spiraling into a bottle should be done clockwise or counterclockwise), the twins must help their powerful uncle Nimrod preserve the balance between opposing djinn tribes. Kerr's background as a writer for adults may explain his tendency to give grown-ups more personality than his preteen protagonists, and one sometimes winces at characterizations that seem like holdovers from the colonial era (one Egyptian servant named Karim is dubbed "Creemy" because he smiles "like a cat that's had the cream"). But it's hard not to admire the well-crafted scaffolding that supports the fantasy (for instance, all djinn suffer from claustrophobia--you'd have it too if your ancestors were always getting trapped inside stoppered vessels). Casting kids in roles of real magic and power is a time-tested premise, and this variation gains extra appeal from its sources in a refreshingly different tradition than those generally tapped by witch-and-wizardry retreads. The enticing metallic cover won't hurt, either. Expect the twins to transubstantiate in two more volumes to complete the Children of the Lamp trilogy. Wonderful genre crossover! You'll not want to put it down.

I love genre crossovers, and this is great one. It's Beverly Lewis meets Veronica Roth, with a bit of Stephen King's Firestarter thrown in for good measure. While I'm not a huge fan of first person point of view, this one was done so well that I really didn't notice it. Once the action starts, you can NOT put this book down. I finished the book in a matter of hours and will probably get the sequels. One nice thing is that you can stop with book 1 if you want to (just don't read the teaser prologue for the next book, and you can believe the characters are going to live happily ever after). I really dislike books that end with cliffhangers just to make you have to buy the next book to find out what happens, but this book has an ending and a good one. Grounded is well-written, well edited, and a great addition to the Indie market. I wish all Indie books were this well produced.

Warning: those who lean very left politically and who believe in the honesty and necessity of the current environmental movement will probably be insulted by this book,since the environmental politics of our current era is the bad guy in this dystopia. I happen to agree with the political sentiment expressed in the book, so I enjoyed it, but others may not so much. This book also expresses strong faith, but is not necessarily "Christian."

fun and fast paced

I will start with the good. This was a fun and fast paced, dystopian, young adult novel. The characters were likeable and well-written. There wasn't a slow moment in the story, which is great.

Lydia and Jeremiah are two Amish, 17 year old kids. When Lydia's father has a stroke and is sneaked into Crater City under an assumed name, Lydia and Jeremiah receive permission to go on Rumspringa, so Lydia can be with her dad.

Dystopian World: It was a world filled with consumers and pollution. A nuclear accident caused everyone to support the Green Republic, the rulers. All energy usage is carefully monitored and regulated, but it is widely known that the Green Republic shows favoritism for certain people. This is also when it was decided that the Amish would be walled into a preserve. The Amish eat meat, wear leather, and aren't vaccinated, a major sin under the new regime. (But the Amish built an opening into the wall.)

Plot: While the Amish plot element is unique, the rest of this read like Firestarter by Stephen King. In King's book a group of college student's volunteer to take part in drug trials (in this book they were military soldiers), which cause them to have paranormal powers (in this book the power is electrical). Two in the drug trials get married and have a daughter with even more powers (in this book two couples have a boy and a girl). The government wants the daughter for experimentation (the government wants Lydia for experimentation). The daughter, Charlie, is captured and is convinced by a plant, John, to really show them what she can do (A gov't plant, David, convinces Lydia to really show them what she can do.) Charlie is taken to a sealed room with the government scientists safely behind glass divider (same for Lydia). Charlie burns so hot she burns the crap out of everything and even effects the scientist behind the glass wall (same for Lydia, but she even bursts the glass and taunts the scientists). There are even similar endings...ugh.

Love: Another case of insta-love occurs between Lydia and Corwin. Yes, there is a love triangle. I hate insta-love and love triangles.

Characters: I did like them, but the whole love thing ruined it for me.

Overall: It was still a fun and fast paced read, but I liked Firestarter more than Grounded.

Electrifying!!!

I never know what to think when I start reading a book by a new author.
But this one was electrifying!!!
It starts off as an innocent girl from an Amish village who goes out into the real world to see how life is for others. With it being the year 2050, things are very different from what you would normally expect.
The things that happen catch you off guard. And then keep your attention with trying to figure out what is or even could happen next. This book had me on the edge of my seat all the way to the last page.
Would recommend this book to everyone!!

A good repertoire book for the Ruy Lopez

This book is good at what it is supposed to be good at. If you want to start playing the Ruy with White, you ought to get a repertoire book or two. And this is a very reasonable choice.

No, it doesn't cover the Exchange Variation. That is the whole point. Larry Kaufman's book (The Chess Advantage in Black and White) is a fine repertoire book that has White playing the Exchange Variation, so if you want to do that, get his book, not this one.

But if you want to play the real Ruy Lopez, get this book.

You probably already have some ideas about how you want to meet some variations of the Ruy. The reason you need a repertoire book is so that you can get ideas about how to meet some of the lines you don't know much about. And this book is great at explaining the ideas behind the various defences, as well as giving some specific lines to play.

Of course, the book is a few years old already. But I think that is not a big problem. Theory hasn't changed all that much, and the ideas that are presented are, for the most part, valid. You will want to stay up-to-date on some lines, of course.

The author recommends playing the anti-Marshall with 8 a4. That is not a bad line, but I certainly prefer allowing Black to play the Marshall. That's not a problem with the book, of course, merely a personal preference.

I do have a minor complaint about the book, however. Namely, suppose you read this book and then play, um, me. What will happen? Will you be prepared for what I play in the opening?

No.

You see, as Black, I'll play the Berlin Defence. Emms spends twelve pages on this defence and gives the ideas behind it. But this book is faulty on both the ideas and the lines if you play me. I've played the Berlin for over thirty years as Black. And when I get into the endgame Emms recommends, my first choice is always to get my King to the Queenside, to b7 or c6, where it is both safe and active. If you take the advice in this book, you'll let me do that. The line is 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 Nf6 4 0-0 Nxe4 5 d4 Nd6 6 Bxc6 dxc6 7 dxe5 Nf5 8 Qxd8+ Kxd8 9 Nc3.

At this point, I may play 9...Bd7, which this book does not consider. But even if I play 9...Ne7, 9...h6, or 9...Be6, all of which the book does consider, you still will not be expecting my King to head for the Queenside, with my pawns on b6, c7, and c5. On top of this, recent high-level grandmaster games seem to be confirming the power of my strategy.

And one more tidbit. The book has a good chapter on the Open Variation: 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 Nxe4 6 d4. Well, there is an unsound and flaky try for Black here, which I occasionally spring on folks in 5-minute games, namely 6...exd4 (the infamous Riga Variation). The book gives some good advice here, but it stops just one move short. It advises 7 Re1 d5 8 Nxd4 Bd6 9 Nxc6 Bxh2+ 10 Kh1! (not Kxh2, which gives Black a perpetual) 10...Qh4 11 Rxe4+ dxe4 12 Qd8+ Qxd8 13 Nxd8+ Kxd8 14 Kxh2. Yes, but the book needs to give you just one more move, because when I play 14...Be3, half my opponents play 15 Nc3? They are not happy when I reply 15...c5, winning material. This silly trap is the whole point of this defence, so the book should have warned everyone.

On the whole, however, I think it is an excellent book. I recommend it.

Good Working Picture of the Opening

This book offers advice for the practitioner of the Spanish. It is reasonably complete in the fact that it covers the opening from the point of view of black's responses.
As you know the Spanish goes 1. e4-e5, 2. Nf3-Nc6 3. Bb5 ... It is here where the author starts. The book goes through all the major variations in some detail. (Often my computer will eventually diverge down some hidden lines of play which were overlooked by this book.) The only major drawback with this book is that the exchange variation is not covered in-depth.
Overall, this is a good book and recomended for any player. (Also, if you are a beginner and are looking to study the openings, the Ruy Lopez and the Queen's Gambit are a good place to start.)

Great introduction to the Ruy

I am an intermediate player who is trying to improve my opening play. For someone like me this book is great! It covers all of blacks major responses (atleast the ones I've met with) and gives you enough moves to get you into a good middle game position. I also found the chapters where the author explains some of the "ideas" and common themes very helpful.
