Dummies Has Ways of Making You Talk: Not Quite All in One German

I read World War II history and watch some German cinema. I find that I don't really trust dubbing, and I don't want to rely on other people to interpret for me. When Aquirre: the Wrath of God or Das Boot flickers on screen at night, I want to understand the words from my speakers.

As it happens, German All-in-One for Dummies came down the Vine. Organized as into several "books", it is written by the headline authors of German For Dummies, (with CD)and the portable German Phrases For Dummies. I don't know if their newest project reprints prior information, but it appears to be the heftiest in the series, at 600 pages and a crammed appendix. Aside from tourist vocab, the later parts of the book delve into grammar, and forming original German statements from the basic parts you have learned.

True to the Dummies series, this tome mixes light humor, friendly typography, and icon-driven learning flow with serious subjects of studies. So on page 210 the book shares practical phrases for announcing flora and fauna one might see while on a trip to the German countryside, then slyly slips in:

"Ich habe eine lilafarbene Kuh gesehen! (iH hah-be ayn-e lee-la-far-ben-e kooh ge-zey-en!) (I saw a purple-colored cow!) Well, maybe not in the Alps, but you can see the purple cow on the wrapper of a well-known brand of chocolate."

Book I introduces the German language from the perspective of a visitor, whether a tourist for a week or a soldier for a year. So the language is taught in the form of conversations for everything from finding taxi stands to buying clothing. Along the way are a number of useful tid-bits: such as the difference between American and German clothing sizes. Book II continues this theme, such as teaching the reader about European currencies as well as how to ask about them in German.

Speaking as a writer, this book tips me off on how German is written, and that takes me to the advanced chapters. Books I and II cover a lot of ground for the tourist, the businessperson, and the servicemember, throughly mainly rote pronunciation of necessary terms and phrases. Book III kicks off the advanced stage of grammar so that students can learn the underlying rules necessary to form their own original conversations in German. Judging from what I read on other customer reviews, this is a major advantage over popular language series like Rosetta Stone.

All-in-One includes a CD of simulated conversations from the book. The single disc obviously doesn't repeat 600 pages of examples, but it does coordinate tactically chosen examples. For example, Pages 129 and 132 present two modest-length exchanges between a department store Verkauferun and a Frau Schulte; both are repeated verbatim in text and audio. The CD enhances the education specifically because you can see and hear the German speech, and because the audio takes the time to provide both a normal speaking cadence, and then reconstructs the same example in a slowed down, syllabically punctuated reading.

For me, the ability to read and to hear, repeating the track and flipping back to the pronunciation guide as necessary, was the most immediately useful part of this Dummies publication. So there really ought to be more than one CD of speech examples for an all-in-one book. As it stands, there is a separate German For Dummies Audio Set by a different author.

On that note though, the pronunciation guide should come first thing. Book I, Chapter 1 starts off with cognates, false cognates, lenders, borrowers, and pop expressions. All of these are a friendly way to ease the English speaker into German, except I was guessing and mangling pronunciation. The basic pronouncements should come first thing.

Also, as an all-in-one set, this book is a little unwieldy for the visitor. This is best studied vigorously in advance of a trip, then reviewing at a home base rather than trying to lug it around town. Aside from the physical bulk, it isn't necessarily organized for quick reference of important phrasings. That said, German All-in-One includes an Appendix which repeats and summarizes many of the vocabulary and tables in one place. This includes two mini-dictionaries for German to English or English to German reference.

Speaking of reference, there is little supplemental instruction at Dummies online. The product page for All-in-One includes a list of related content web articles which, as far as I can tell, repeat the book. In the spirit of Nolo books I have reviewed in the past, there really should be more Internet resources available for people who own a copy of the book, such as MP3 files with more pronouncing examples, and PDF files of German official forms, signage, and workbook practice for the student. Dummies.com has a new eLearning site, but German currently isn't in the list of available courses.

All-in-one also isn't all there is. The book teaches Standard German, which was originally a written language to bridge major verbal varieties. Standard persists today as a polycentric speech with multiple standard dialects. The book doesn't get into these linguistic gymnastics. So for instance, it doesn't distinguish between the different ways that the combined consonant "ch"--as in "ich" or "nacht"--may be pronounced.

Second, the book concentrates on grammatically correct translations instead of literal English translations in the first two books. This again appears to be for the ease of study. Book III gets into the literal translations of German, where the order of words can be noticeably different from English grammar. I feel the literal needs to be shown sooner to the reader, alongside the English-proper in order too understand the language.

Aside from some of these concerns, All-in-One is a pretty handy book with a lot to offer a patient reader. For five stars, a book that is titled "all-in-one" ought to offer more audio, either in CDs or in web files, ought to revise how some of the information is presented to the reader, and ought to expand on dialect. In this age too, there should be wider internet supplemental support for a book with the lofty aim of being comprehensive. Yet it does indeed get into many parts of German beyond regurgitating tourist book phrases, and it goes for an approach that starts with the visitor and ends with the student who wishes to get into the nuts and bolts for future mastery.

Huge Tome for German Learners

At about 600 pages, if you don't end up learning German with this 5 books in 1 tome, you will at least be able to seriously hurt someone. Kidding aside, this is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to learn or brush up on their German. Each book addresses language learning from a different angle, from the basics that a tourist may need, including important information for eating to other tourist activities, including seeking emergency medical services. Each book is comprehensive in itself, and also stands alone, so that you can begin at the level you desire, or go back at anytime to refresh a particular area. As with most languages, the difficult part is the formal grammar. This book does not flinch from dealing with that and presents the material in categories that aid in learning. The book is also accompanied by a CD that covers some of the basics and includes some of the dialogue from the book. This is a must have resource for anyone who wants to learn German.

Walk the Walk, Talk the Talk

There's been an increased interest in language learning. I don't know if Quantum thinking has anything to do with this, but how we learn and problem solve,come to express ourselves in a new tongue is an important part of acquiring a second language.This also makes your brain work in ways you should, give your brain a run!

There has been numerous theories on why we learn or don't learn language.I've come to think that any new language book takes all the theories together as ONE. Here we have that.
The older you get the process is suppose to be more difficult, I can tell you myself, past 60+ you need to work at your second language everyday,and be excited about it.Challenge your imagination. With a second language Food will taste better, you will love classical music more. Einstein and the Schrodinger cats might make more sense to you.

Get up in the morning and learn,look at words, speak,listen, read, whatever you can do, Do it Everyday."Talkin the Talk"(page 176). Carry this book around with you. There is never a shortcut for that, and you will be thrilled about the results if you apply yourself.

This is great place to start, no nonsense comprehensive approach to German, forget the "Dummies" icon, this is difficult going; and if you do nothing,you will not get too far.
The authors are well aware of this process, and the difficulties.Here they allow you to work at the book as you will,not cover to cover, but bouncing around, that's how the mind works for many, again the affinity with quantum thinking perhaps.

You don't need to learn grammar and conjugate the subjunctive or the future tense prior to even speaking one word of German.No jump in, there are pronunciation sounds for English below the German.First The book allows you to re-establish what you know already, there are countless words and concepts that overlap with English. Then you can speak as you will, or read a dialogue, and learn that Travel-German;"Shopping simplified","Describing the Weather"; Real items from the Lebenswelt you can relate to immediately. . .all that is here,"Asking small favors",Pg 241.

Then"Laying out the Basics,building sentences". You need to do both. Speak like you know it, and then get more deeply into the real language, Yes! Verbs,usually at the end of a sentence.. . pronouns.I would build a basic first, skip yes, but only within the first 200 pages or so. The nice large book comes with a DVD, so you can hear it all.

Please have Fun!, that's what it is really about. Talk German on the phone, or pretend like you are speaking to an imaginary lover, or work-person, or baseball player. . . .or Beethoven. Talk to him? He won't bite. . . .Please critique yourself, you may not do it right the the first time, but try harder. . .

In the dark corners of Paris's bohemian cafes, salons and theaters, some of the greatest European thinkers of the 18th century congregated, and it was here that the Encyclopédie was born. The most enormous publishing effort of the day, the Encyclopédie would be neither the first of its kind nor ultimately the largest. But in this meticulously researched historical narrative, journalist and historian Blom (To Have and to Hold) argues that the Encyclopédie represents a turning point in the tide of intellectual history and is the last veritable record of Europe's ideas, traditions, politics, economics, tools and restrictions before the French Revolution. The bulk of Blom's narrative is driven by the drama that occurred among the work's many contributors and between them and the society in which they lived. The writers, many of whom stood for free thought and secularism, struggled with censorship, exile and even prison. And, as is revealed here through epistolary exchanges, on a personal level, the famed band of philosophes-including Diderot, D'Alembert, Voltaire, Grimm and Rousseau-were divided by mistresses, money, manipulation and, most of all, ego. Blom takes the reader through these events and through the Encyclopédie itself in a thorough and engaging way, and he makes a strong case for the work's importance in shaping philosophy and political thought for years to come. *Starred Review* Late in this absorbing history of the most notorious European publication of the eighteenth century, Blom says that the Encyclopedie marks the end more than the beginning of an era. Intended in part to describe, and thereby honor, the shop crafts on which urbanizing Europe relied for the material base of civilization (apparel, foodstuffs, building materials, utensils and tools, etc.), the 28-volume work, 25 years in the making, became the largest resource on preindustrial means of production. In mid-eighteenth-century Paris, the church and the monarchy saw (accurately) in the Encyclopedie the uprising of materialism, atheism, and republicanism against them. Many Encyclopedie contributors were harassed, imprisoned, and/or exiled by Louis XV's government, spurred on by Jesuits and Jansenists, who, otherwise at each other's throats, united against the godless Encyclopedie. In the end, the new age of venture capitalism won out. The Encyclopedie's bookseller-financiers were too heavily invested to let it die. They made out like bandits, too, while the intellectuals who wrote it had to settle for fame (the principal writer of the last several volumes didn't even get a complimentary set). The sympathetic hero of the whole endeavor was Denis Diderot, leading editor throughout, who was legally obliged, for the sake of the Encyclopedie, to suppress his now-classic novels and essays during his lifetime. The Encyclopedie's story is both epic and epochal, and Blom tells it intelligently, gracefully, and stylishly. Ray Olson

Encyclopedie

Philipp Blom is a delightful writer and this is a fascinating and highly entertaining history of the great French Encyclopedie created over the course of 25 turbulent years in the mid-1700s. Despite the title, this is really a book about people, with the encyclopedie as thread to tie the stories together. I have very little background in 18th C European/French history Blom makes it entirely accessible for novice and expert alike (although I suspect many of the stories here are well worn, but new to me, and well told). Probably the greatest compliment is I want to learn more about those involved, probably starting with a biography of Rousseau. This book easily sits besides Simon Winchester's "The Meaning of Everything" and Henry Hitchings "Defining the World". As another reviewer mentioned, anyone with an interest in Wikipedia will find it fascinating.

Fascinating view of both the personalities and the project they undertook

This is the kind of book that even such dedicated encyclopedistes as Diderot, the Chevalier de Jaucourt and d'Alembert would have found hard to classify. Yes, it's history -- but is it political history? social history? biography? philosophy?

In fact, Blom's work is a masterful combination of all these, making it as unique and intriguing as the original Encyclopedie must have seemed to its 18th century readers, confronted as they were with a world where the amount of knowledge available (theoretically) to them grew exponentially by the day. How to keep pace with this? How could they maintain an understanding of the world and their place in it? That, as described by Blom, was one of the catalysts for the creation of the Encyclopedie, but the goals of its contributors and chief architects, especially Denis Diderot, were quite different. Rather than reinforce the existing social order and its underpinnings -- theological dogma as conveyed by the Catholic Church and absolute monarchy, represented in the person of Louis XV -- they embarked on a mission to portray an alternative world, one in which reason prevailed and where an artisan's talents and knowledge were valued as much as those of a pleasure-loving monarch. Often, this could only be accomplished indirectly -- as Blom shows by pointing out how thoughtful readers could fill in the gaps between the lines in the entries on drone bees, who served only as courtiers to the queen bee and didn't work for a living but lived off the efforts of the worker bees.

Blom effortlessly weaves together the political and social background against which Diderot and his collaborators toiled for 16 years to assemble what became a 28-volume opus with the details of their lives and experiences, from Diderot's incarceration in the Chateau de Vincennes (to obtain his liberty, he had to forego a career as a professional philosophe -- devastating to him on one level, but something that forced him into his lifelong work on the Encylopedie) to the likely impact of Rousseau's hereditary incontinence problem on his anti-social behavior and ultimate rupture with the cosmopolitan encyclopedistes who had previously been his closest friends. Especially intriguing are the glimpses of other personalities, less familiar to history, such as de Jaucourt and the Baron Holbach.

When Diderot embarked on his life work -- reluctantly enough -- he was not a member of any prestigious Academy and, in Blom's words, "was known only to his friends and to the police." Today, he is widely known -- but ironically, to many, it is because of his endless travails on the Encyclopedie, a project that often felt like a millstone around his neck. As for the encyclopedie itself, while it did serve as an intellectual precursor to the Revolutionary-era thinkers who would follow the encyclopedistes, the work itself was as much a mark of the end of the world that Diderot and his companions knew. It would serve to preserve the traditional artisanal crafts that would shortly give way to industrialized processes. Meanwhile, the creation of the book itself -- with even censors tacitly acknowledging the importance of the project to the French economy -- served, as Blom points out, as a sign that the age of capitalism had arrived. "Questions of true religion, of dogma, of respect for authority, even of royal power, could be subjugated to the higher interests of economic wellbeing if this was judged necessary."

I can't comment from a scholarly perspective on the nuances of Blom's portrayal of Diderot and his collaborators, but the book is a lively and compelling introduction to the era and the subject that anyone interested in the topics it concerns -- political philosophy, the rise of a civil society, the history of ideas, censorship, etc. -- will find compelling. And Blom does justice to his subject, making each character, from the best known (Rousseau, Voltaire) to the most obscure (Diderot's mysterious mistress, 'Sophie' Vallon) remarkably vivid.

There are two few books of this kind - accessible, well-written, thoughtful, well-researched and broad in scope -- and Blom has added yet another to his own personal canon within the genre. (Interestingly, his previous book, To Have and To Hold was a history of collecting objects; this book focuses instead on the collecting but also the dissemination of ideas and concepts and information.) It's a lively history of the times -- you'll almost feel the famous Parisian mud pulling your shoes off as you read about Paris in the middle of the 18th century -- but also a group biography and the history of an endeavor and its legacy.

If you find this book intriguing, you might also be interested in another book about literary ventures and misadventures in 18th century France. As Blom mentions throughout this history, many French writers published in Amsterdam to avoid the royal censors -- their works were later smuggled back into Paris inside barrels of salted herring, among other things -- a form of 18th century samizdat. A good survey of the literary underworld of Diderot's era can be found in The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Pre-Revolutionary France.

Amazing Story

The price is a little bit much for this short story that you can find online, but otherwise still a really compelling coming-of-age story.

What this book offers, however, is just a couple of papers of critique on the book and what Oates meant by some of the events in the book.

I needed this for a class, but I don't mind keeping it. Still a good buy.

I bought this book for my literature class - it was excellent, my first time reading Oates and I most definately recommend her if you are interested in literature (or even if you're not - the background of her short story is interesting - based on a real-life serial killer in Arizona). The critical essays in the back of the book are invaluable, so if you are looking to write a research paper this is a fanstastic purchase!

Berserk is manga artist Kentaro Miura's magnum opus, and it has been serialized since 1990 and is still going strong. Unlike virtually all other commercially successful manga artists, Miura produces his artwork without assistants, and the exquisite detail of this erotic-grotesque, Dungeons & Dragons-esque high fantasy issues from his hand and his hand alone. This visual unity makes for a unique reading experience that is not replicated in any other seinen manga series currently available in English translation--and it is one that appeals to men and women alike.

Volume 34 is an especially important volume, as it brings the "Falcon of the Millennium Empire" arc to its climax and brings the Dark Horse/Digital Manga Publishing US edition of Berserk nearly up to date with the Japanese release schedule. It is, in every respect, a truly epic installment, and the battle between the Kushan emperor and those who follow Griffith takes up most of the space. It is, hands down, a visual tour de force, completely wordless for pages at a time to maximize affective impact. A series of gorgeous two-page spreads are a particular treat--and the illusory images of four members of the God Hand toward the end of the volume are simply unforgettable.

In fact, the ostensible protagonist of the story and his rag-tag band of loyal outcasts appear only briefly on their way to a literal Magic Kingdom where, it is hoped, some of the wrong which Griffith once committed against those who trusted him might be righted. Suffice it to say that Berserk takes very seriously its condemnation of cruelty and violence, and unlike scores of other popular manga series, cruelty toward women is never a laughing matter. This volume is, in short, an exciting time, both for Guts and for this title's loyal fans. Highest recommendation.

One minor annoyance...

The story remains as captivating and epic as always. Amazing how Miura can create such a long story and never lose focus. He knows exactly what he wants and it makes me think he had the entire thing very specifically mapped out before even starting.

Anyway, that being said... I have one minor complaint: Puck.
Don't get me wrong; I loved Puck through volumes 1-around 26 or so, when he was joined by Isidro and Evarella.
Here in lies the problem; Puck isn't a character anymore, his character has been degraded into costume one-liners all the time. I've counted. In the last 6 volumes, he's done that almost every panel he's been in. And now that we have Isidro AND Evarella alongside him, it creates comedy relief overload.
Puck is almost never drawn photo-realistically anymore (it's always his parody form) so half the time, I've basically forgotten what he even looks like.

I hope he can go back to being a contributing character once the gang reaches their destination, his homeland, but in the meantime, I personally find it to be quite grating after the 30th time. It gets old rather quick... such a shame too to see him degrade like that.

It was the first time I considered buying an actual manga volume to support the creators, and it turned out well
I didn't like how Miura uses coal for drawing, but I'll continue to buy more manga from here,

About Author:

James Anthony Froude (23 April 1818 – 20 October 1894) was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. Worth Paying For

Why is this Kindle collection worth paying for, even though there is also a free version on Kindle? Mainly because the ghastly formatting problems in the free version of the second volume of *History of England... Wolsey... Elisabeth have been fixed here.

How about the content? I haven't read all of it, but what I have read adds a lot. Froude's essay on *The Philosopy of Catholocism*, for example, casts much light on Froude's own religious views, more complicated than they seem. *Froudacity* is a mislabled attack on Froude's extreme racism and praises of slavery (!). Froude's essays on Erasmus and Luther are interesting, as is thebiograpical introduction by the editor.

It has a good organization to understand all muscles (function,origin,inserction). Bones and articulations are clear to see in figures and descriptions are precise.
