Die Entstehung ist zwischen 1170 und 1230 sehr unsicher datiert und die Überlieferung umreißt einen Zeitraum von rund 300 Jahren. Zwischen dem zweiten Viertel des 13. Jahrhunderts bis zum zweiten Jahrzehnt des 16. Jahrhunderts ist das Nibelungenlied in 35 Schriften nachzuweisen. Dabei zeigt die Überlieferung von rund elf fast vollständig und 24 in Bruchstücken erhaltenen Zeugnissen, dass das Nibelungenlied auf eine hohe zeitgenössische Resonanz stieß.1 Die Klage, die des öfteren von der Handlung des Epos abweicht und als eigenständige Dichtung zu verstehen ist folgt in den meisten Fällen dem Nibelungenlied nach.
Die Hundeshagensche Handschrift ist also eine von vielen überlieferten Handschriften, doch sie ist die einzige, die farbige Illustrationen enthält. Sie zählt zu der sogenannten Not-Guppe.2 Da dieser Kodex eine einmalige Stellung in der Überlieferung einnimmt, bedarf sie einer eigenständigen Untersuchung.
Hierbei sollen als erstes die Basisinformationen erörtert werden. Dazu zählt zu aller erst die Erläuterung zur Faksimileausgabe Hans Hornungs, der als Erster und bisher Einziger die Illustrationen in Originalgröße und an ihrer angestammten Positionen innerhalb der Hundeshagenschen Handschrift veröffentlichte. Zuvor hatte schon Hermann Degering die Abbildungen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht, allerdings nutzte er dazu die Übersetzung Simrocks und löste die Miniaturen von ihren ursprünglichen Stellen an den Aventuirenenden oder Anfängen.
Zweitens soll dann der Aufbau des Hundeshagenschen Kodex und anschließend die Schrift des Kodex betrachtet werden. Abschließend soll versucht werden die Handschrift zeitlich einzuordnen und den Entstehungsort zu entschlüsseln. Dazu werden diverse Fakten wie Dialektik, Papier, Schrift und Schreiber sowie Namenseinträge und mögliche Aufbewahrungsorte zur Hilfe herangezogen.
Anschließend werden dann drei Illustrationen der Handschrift exemplarisch betrachtet. Da nicht alle Miniaturen durchleuchtet werden können, werden lediglich die Bildseiten Nummer drei, zwölf und vierzehn genauer beschrieben. Die Wahl fiel auf diese drei Bildseiten, da sie meiner Meinung nach entweder wichtige Aspekte des Nibelungenliedes darstellen, weil sie in der Betrachtung schwer zu deuten sind oder darstellerische Besonderheiten aufweisen.

Novel interpretations of the Nghe Tinh soviets (1930-1931), the first major communist uprising in Vietnam, and Vietnamese communist successes in World War II built an audience for their views and made an extremely alien ideology comprehensible to growing numbers of Vietnamese. In what is by far the most thorough examination in English of modern Vietnamese Buddhism and its transformations, McHale argues that, contrary to received wisdom, Buddhism was not in decline during the 1920-1945 period; in fact, more Buddhist texts were produced in Vietnam at that time than at any other in its history. This finding suggests that the heritage of the Vietnamese past played a crucial role in the late colonial period. Not without reason is Binchy (Evening Class; Circle of Friends) most popular for her novels, as this unimpressive collection of short stories linked by the theme of travel-and-learn indicates. Although the time is now and the place usually Dublin, the writing is dated, dependent on such romantic-comedy movie devices as mistaken identity, switched suitcases, confidante becoming lover, the stranger who upsets all the old balances, the surprise presence of Mum at the restaurant of the out-of-the-way hotel intended for a tryst. The most promising of the batch is the title story, a series of letters between a mother who left Ireland and her daughter, the young woman who has gone there to see the village her mother grew up in. The characters here have depth and secrets not immediately apparent. The conflicts between mother and daughter mirror the conflicts the mother has about her homeland. Unfortunately, the remaining 13 stories touch on formulaic generational and gender misunderstandings. The characters are established early, the predictable plot mechanisms uncoil like the proverbial spring and the conclusions are socked home, often in a chirpy manner.

Suprisingly this book seems to come up short. It is not one of Binchy's better books. If you're looking for a light read in a doctor's office this may be your book but if you're looking for a substantive read pick another one of Binchy's books like Tara Road or Echoes.

Excellent as usual for Amar Chitra Katha

Hardback consisting of 5 comics bound together: The Childhood Days of Ram, Ram in Exile, The Abduction of Sita, In Search of Sita, Ram the Victorious. The comics are the usual for Amar Chitra Katha (entertaining, colorful, good depiction of the story). The binding on my copy was very iffy. I had to re-glue the end pages back onto the hardback boards myself. It seems like it will hold up now. There are many, many comics in the ACK series. Great Except for the Computer Graphics

Amar Chitra Katha's are great in general and I have no hesitation in recommending them.

Hundreds of the old issues were hand drawn by great artists and are basically peerless in the comics world. However, for the newer issues, Amar Chitra Katha artists have been using computer graphics. I recognize that that we have to move with the times, and maybe this is right direction, but personally for me, these new comics don't have the charm of the earlier hand drawn artwork.

For this particular issue, the artwork is by Dilip Kadam, who has done a good job with the older traditional titles as well. However, it looks like the art work in this issue was digitally colored - the panels look very busy with too many colors. The text uses digitally typeset font (not hand drawn), and is rather verbose. However, the binding and paper quality are excellent.

I am a collector of Amar Chitra Katha issues, and in spite of my grumbling, I continue to amass them. I recommend that you do the same!

The book is good and has a lot of useful words and lessons

My husband is Filipino and we got this book so he could teach me Tagalog. The book is good and has a lot of useful words and lessons. A lot of the sentence structure they teach is more formal and isn't what is actually used in the Philippines. The CD could be better if it told you the English version of the words.

Not a good book for Beginners

When I first got the book I thought it was basic Tagalog, but it wasn't. This book is for people that know some Tagalog. It was very hard to use for learning the language. Not a good book for beginners.

Excellent Book for Learners

This is by far the best overall book I've seen for learning Tagalog. This is probably the best thing for learning Tagalog next to Rosetta Stone. The 40 plus lessons covers the basics of learning Tagalog including grammar, not just memorizing expressions. After the lessons, there are appendices full of exercises and other references to further enhance your skills with Tagalog. Included in such appendices are Tagalog idioms and samples of everyday conversations a person may have. There's also a glossary of words in both languages for quick reference. But what really makes this book stand out for me is the included audio CD. All of the chapters are narrated on the audio CD, unlike some other books which may only have the foreign language word pronounced. I have found this feature especially useful for listening while traveling or doing whatever. It's easy to follow along as the narrator speaks to actually understand the lesson and then hear a native Tagalog speaker pronounce the Tagalog words. Great buy for anyone who is just starting to learn Tagalog or wants a thorough overview of the language. I would recommend this book to be followed up by "Modern Tagalog Grammar" by Teresa Ramos. This book is not for beginners but gets much deeper into Tagalog grammar and should help you to become truly fluent in this difficult language to learn.

Beautiful visual reference but it needs considerable revision

Since the eighties I don't remember any attempt to provide a comprehensive and complete visual guide of Roman military personnel and their enemies in one book. The WRG books gave a quick overview of the armies, battles and history providing dozens of simple line drawings. It was a great product for the time and many wargamers used it.

The author intelligently realized that there was no recent product to fill those needs; in thirty years there was nothing to substitute the very old WRG titles. Of course there are hundreds of titles which provide good illustrations, but nothing as comprehensive as the above mentioned books.

The production values of this book are of the highest standard with high quality pages, hard cover, very good coverage of all relevant time periods of roman history, and no big lacunas of Roman enemies or allies. The art work is truly amazing and congratulations are in order to Tom Croft, Simon Smith and Mathew Vince; obviously we must also commend the author which most probably provided valuable information and explanations to the artists. For that reason this book should be a must buy for modelers, wargamers, miniature painters, cinema and television art designers, etc.

Unfortunately this beautiful book has severe weaknesses that make it impossible for me to give the five stars that I believe a corrected and revised next edition will achieve. The mistakes in the text are indeed many and I will only mention a few illustrative examples.

- There are mistakes in naming places (like Vindobona that is refered as Vindabona in page 6 for example), persons, etc.;
- There are severe contradictions (like for example the hoplite formation sometimes being originally influenced by Etruscans others by Greeks (page 20/21); or the fact that in the text in page 34 Phillip the Arab was killed in action in 249, and exactly in the next sentence states that Decius is the first Roman emperor to be killed in action in 251);
- Photographs captions (the figures in the page 24 picture certainly doesn't show legionaries; the sashes mark them as officers, probably tribunes);
- Dates like the deeds of Agrippa (he died in 11BC it's impossible for him to have built anything in 25 AD) or the siege of Syracuse (it was fought between 214-212 BC, not 213-211 BC);
- Repeated mistakes like defending that there were 7 Etruscan kings in the Roman monarchical period, in fact according to tradition only 3 were Etruscans;
- Big, big mistakes like Carthaginian settlements in places like Madeira! I'm Portuguese and I can assure everyone that there is no Carthaginian settlement in Madeira. Probably the most ghastly mistake is where the author states that Sassanid's invade SPAIN in page 44! Confusing Caucasian Iberia with Hispania (today's Iberian Peninsula).

Those are just examples, there are many more. Although the illustrations are excellent they also have some flaws (I'm quite aware that it would be almost impossible to make hundreds of images without any mistakes). Here goes some needing correction: Sulla was blond; I'm not aware of any roman crossguard like the one portrayed in Constantine sword; the Vercingetorix image is the only illustration based on completely anachronistic material, it's clearly out of place (he probably wouldn't have such long hair, nor use La Tene bronze armor), the imaginifer of 2nd, 3rd cent on page 146 is carrying an imago of Julius Caesar which died in 44 BC, he should be using the imago of the current emperor).

This can become an iconic book for many target groups, but it needs a new revised edition; which I'm waiting expectantly so I can give a well deserved 5 stars to this project.

good overview

This is in overview of the Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire. It covers the Roman Republic, Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire and the enemies of the empire. It also includes ships and siege weapons. For more detail Greece and Rome at War is better, but if you want the Byzantine Empire this is right book. If you could have only 2 books on Roman uniforms get this book and Greece and Rome at War.

Encyclopedia of uniforms of the Roman world

Excellent painting guide for this period in history. It would have been very useful when I was painting 25mm lead figures of this historical period. But, better a little later than never.
