Unforgettable, exciting volume of Berserk

Some still remember Guts as the courageous leader of the Band of the Hawk's Raiders. But more know him now as the Black Swordsman, a marked man hacking and slashing his way across Midland. Who has marked him for death? That would be the God Hand, beings whose power is exceeded only by their evil. Why does he not let them take him? The answer to that question is simple: One of the God Hand, once Guts' friend, betrayed him and the rest of the Hawks--and as long as this former friend Griffith lives, Guts will not be the one to expire first.

In this volume, the demonic Kushan emperor has assumed a horrific new gargantuan form and is wreaking untold death and destruction upon Midland. Only Griffith and his reformed Band of the Hawk have a prayer of stopping this marauder in its tracks, and only if they reveal their true monstrous Apostle forms. Their erstwhile human allies, though, faced with their own destruction, do not recoil as they normally would away from these abominations that seem to be defending their lives. But little do they know that this war will conclude with the very fabric of reality transformed...perhaps forever.

Berserk is manga artist Kentaro Miura's magnum opus, and it has been serialized since 1990 and is still going strong. Unlike virtually all other commercially successful manga artists, Miura produces his artwork without assistants, and the exquisite detail of this erotic-grotesque, Dungeons & Dragons-esque high fantasy issues from his hand and his hand alone. This visual unity makes for a unique reading experience that is not replicated in any other seinen manga series currently available in English translation--and it is one that appeals to men and women alike.

Volume 34 is an especially important volume, as it brings the "Falcon of the Millennium Empire" arc to its climax and brings the Dark Horse/Digital Manga Publishing US edition of Berserk nearly up to date with the Japanese release schedule. It is, in every respect, a truly epic installment, and the battle between the Kushan emperor and those who follow Griffith takes up most of the space. It is, hands down, a visual tour de force, completely wordless for pages at a time to maximize affective impact. A series of gorgeous two-page spreads are a particular treat--and the illusory images of four members of the God Hand toward the end of the volume are simply unforgettable.

In fact, the ostensible protagonist of the story and his rag-tag band of loyal outcasts appear only briefly on their way to a literal Magic Kingdom where, it is hoped, some of the wrong which Griffith once committed against those who trusted him might be righted. Suffice it to say that Berserk takes very seriously its condemnation of cruelty and violence, and unlike scores of other popular manga series, cruelty toward women is never a laughing matter. This volume is, in short, an exciting time, both for Guts and for this title's loyal fans. Highest recommendation.

One minor annoyance...

The story remains as captivating and epic as always. Amazing how Miura can create such a long story and never lose focus. He knows exactly what he wants and it makes me think he had the entire thing very specifically mapped out before even starting.

Anyway, that being said... I have one minor complaint: Puck.
Don't get me wrong; I loved Puck through volumes 1-around 26 or so, when he was joined by Isidro and Evarella.
Here in lies the problem; Puck isn't a character anymore, his character has been degraded into costume one-liners all the time. I've counted. In the last 6 volumes, he's done that almost every panel he's been in. And now that we have Isidro AND Evarella alongside him, it creates comedy relief overload.
Puck is almost never drawn photo-realistically anymore (it's always his parody form) so half the time, I've basically forgotten what he even looks like.

I hope he can go back to being a contributing character once the gang reaches their destination, his homeland, but in the meantime, I personally find it to be quite grating after the 30th time. It gets old rather quick... such a shame too to see him degrade like that.

I didn't like how Miura uses coal for drawing, but I'll continue to buy more manga from here,

Worth Paying For

Why is this Kindle collection worth paying for, even though there is also a free version on Kindle? Mainly because the ghastly formatting problems in the free version of the second volume of *History of England... Wolsey... Elisabeth have been fixed here.

How about the content? I haven't read all of it, but what I have read adds a lot. Froude's essay on *The Philosopy of Catholocism*, for example, casts much light on Froude's own religious views, more complicated than they seem. *Froudacity* is a mislabled attack on Froude's extreme racism and praises of slavery (!). Froude's essays on Erasmus and Luther are interesting, as is thebiograpical introduction by the editor.

A Must Have

Wow, I have to say I am THOROUGHLY impressed! I've looked through many art books for various techniques and how-to. Some feel lacking as if they skipped steps or are too wordy. This is NOT the case with Fantasy Creatures in Clay at all! I'm happy to say a look through this book shows complete understanding of the materials, as expected, but the artist has taken care to walk us through not only the basic processes, but many fine points which seem to never be discussed in other sculpt books!

Detailed and lots of process photos with a clear and to the point explanation. No space or words were wasted with this, and any artist seeking to improve their sculpt work, or even get into the medium will surely appreciate this book in their resources. Seriously, she's covered things I hadn't even thought of sculpting, such as semi-transparent wings! This is literally years of skill and practice of an artist begging to be at your fingertips, you should take full advantage of.

If your also wondering the materials talked about in this book would cost to start making the beautiful sculpts, they are all easily obtainable here on Amazon, craft stores or even some supermarkets. Really, this book covers everything sculpt related, and is a must have.

Best Book on Sculpting Fantasy Creatures I've Ever Seen

I'm very excited with this purchase. Emily Coleman has out done herself with this book. Mind you, this is not a book with step by step instructions on how to make a dragon or a griffin. Instead Ms. Coleman shares her techniques on how to decide on a pose, how to make the armature of your choice, how to attach the armature to a wooden base if need be, how to block in the clay, etc. She gives detailed instructions on how to sculpt various animal and bird faces, hands, feet, fur, hair and feathers. This book is just what I needed. I have a lot of ideas but didn't know how to execute them. She even explains how to make detailed, feathered wings and wings with membranes. She also explains what tools will be needed and the last section on her painting techniques is priceless. I can't say enough good things about this book. Highly recommended!

Excellent Reference Guide For All Levels

As other reviews have stated, this guide is for both beginning and experienced sculptors, but not beginning artists. You will need to know some anatomy, color theory, and a have little bit of drawing ability to be able to fully appreciate the information contained within. However, the book does contain convenient references to other websites and books that will help you somewhat. Some tutorials are step-by-step and teach you how to create something very specific, which is helpful but doesn't always give you a deeper understanding of how to do the process once on your own. Fantasy Creatures in Clay instead teaches skills and techniques and shows you how to go about using them. It encourages you to practice them on your own until they become instinctive instead of promising some quick way to learn how to sculpt. In that respect it may prove daunting to new sculptors, but rest assured it does give you the information you need to get started and build your abilities.

The guide is beautiful to behold with large and detailed illustrations as well as clear instructions to help you follow along. It is also set up in such a way that referencing it at any stage of your sculpture for help is very and easy allows you to troubleshoot your creation without wasting time. The "field guide" theme and little visual touches such as the field notes make it entertaining and a little more engaging while you are reading. The size and quality of this guide make it quite a bargain at the current price and it would still be worth it near list price.

If you or someone you know is getting into sculpting or have been sculpting for a while and just need some techniques to up your game, this guide will prove invaluable to you.

A wonderful dedication

As an actual interviewee, I was happy to read this. Steven was an amazing interviewer, and he and Bonnie did an amazing job of combining our words into a fluid book!

Artistic, geeky, and very true to it's fandom. If you're a Sailor Moon fan, or call yourself a "Moonie", you've got to read this. Even if you've never quite gotten the phenomena, read it to get it. I'm actually buying a hard copy for my mother, who's never gotten my obsession.

This book is well researched, well written, and well intentioned, And very loyal to the cannon of the series and it's fans. I foresee this being one of the small smattering of North American unofficial Sailor Moon Books, and it's a welcome addition.

For fans and inquisitors alike

As a teen, I never understood Sailor Moon. I'd seen pictures and posters as a small child, but my first real encounter was a friend's recommendation when we were 11 years old. By description, it seemed indistinguishable from "Powerpuff Girls", which was too silly for my pre-teen sensibilities. A couple of years later, I could appreciate the art and style of "Powerpuff Girls", "Dexter's Lab", "Samurai Jack", and "Sheep in the Big City", but not "Sailor Moon". I still couldn't understand why something as far-reaching as Sailor Moon couldn't be as serious as "Batman: The Animated Series" or "Sonic the Hedgehog" (SatAM).

If "Sailor Moon" has never been your cup of preferred beverage, this book covers what we missed. For me, Sally and Bunny were strong role models, but they didn't have the same rapport with each other that male SatAM characters shared. Despite Dee Dee being the inspiration for "Dexter's Lab", she was relegated to a secondary role, in the final cut. The "Powerpuff Girls" were a nice change of pace, but they didn't have to worry about school or the social pressures that the Sailor Scouts encountered. These leading ladies had rapport, presence, and a sworn duty to protect life as we know it.

The "save the world" plot line seems tired, until we remember that this wasn't (and, sadly, still isn't) a typical role for female characters. Perhaps my craving for such stories would have been better satisfied if I'd given Sailor Moon a chance. With an example of strong and complex female leads, maybe I'd have craved more, knowing that girls deserve better. After reading this book, I hope we can all think critically about our fandoms, asking what spoke to us and why.

An excellent introduction to the Sailor Moon fandom for the uninitiated

I was one of the interviewees for this book, so I've known some of the details and findings for quite some time. Not only was it great to take part in such a project, but it was also fascinating to read about so many different experiences of Sailor Moon.

This is a light-hearted, casual read that serves as a great introduction to one of modern anime's most fundamental series. The Sailor Moon generation is grown up now, making our own culture and telling our own stories. This book helps explain why. As our generation creates more comics and TV shows, I can only imagine that Sailor Moon's influence will become even more prominent, and all the experiences captured in this book (mine included) reveal the starting points.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about Sailor Moon's cultural impact. You don't have to be familiar with the series at all–in fact, you may enjoy the book even more if you're starting with little to no knowledge. Seasoned fans, on the other hand, will enjoy the throwbacks to Geocities and fansubbed VHS tapes.

Frequent tense-switching and wordy or passive sentences sometimes makes reading clunky, but the main points still come across clearly. Ultimately, this book is a collection of women telling their stories about their heroes, which are too often brushed aside.

With a tiny "frontisstory" by Robert Coover, a lighthearted introduction by Shapard and afterwords about the short-short-story form by 40 outstanding American writers, the definition of what lies between as "sudden fiction" is well attended to. The 70 pieces themselveshighly compressed, often tantalizingdisplay a multiplicity of modes and derive from a variety of traditions. This anthology contains 70 stories, all under five pages. There are a few standards by Hemingway and Cheever, but most are contemporary pieces by such writers as Paley, Oates, and Carver and some unknowns. At its bestas exemplified by the offerings of John Upike, Arturo Vivante, Bel Kaufman, and Charles Johnsonthis "sudden fiction" form is devastating, at its worst, mere anecdote, but overall this is an unusual and well-conceived collection. In an afterword, 40 writers/editors discuss the genre's limitationsdoes it exist? what to call it?succinctly enough that the book may serve as a text for creative writing students as well as an interesting departure for the general reader. The editors of Sudden Fiction argue for consideration of the shott-short, a highly compressed narrative of under 2,000 words, as a uniquely modern sub-genre of the traditional short story. But while presenting the reader with an abundance of short-short fiction, neither they, nor the writers commenting in the theoretical "AfterWords" section of this anthology, are able to arrive at common agreement as to the aims and characteristics of this form. This is perhaps as it should be, given the diverse antecedents of the short-short in such types as the fablek, folktale, and Zen koan, as well as the myriad directions the contemporary offshoot has taken, encompassing works as different from one another as Tennessee Williams' carefully plotted narrative, "Tent Worms," a modernist fable like H. E. Francis' "Sitting," Peter Taylor's psychological study "A Walled Garden," and the anecdotal humor of Roy Blount Jr.'s "Five Ives." Hemingway and a few other past masters are included to show the historical development of the short-short, but emphasis is on stories of the past five years. Updike, Oates, and Malamud are represented, as are writers recently established, such as Raymond Carver and Jayne Anne Phillips. While not resolving any of the theoretical problems involved, this is nevertheless a lively and thoughtprovoking collection of short fiction. -- From Independent Publisher

Just what you want

A classic of short short fiction, probably my third copy, as people keep walking off with it. Great variety, fun to read, excellent resource for teachers, students and writers.

Bottled Lightning

~It's a great book to have. You can read it on the subway and chew on a few stories in one transit, or just scan the beginnings and look for what catches your eye, or you can curl up on a rainy day and devour the whole book. It's a great way to meet many writers you've heard of but haven't yet read. The only problem is the editor had this in mind so some writers, I presume, were selected because of who they were not what they wrote. Some pieces are vignettes more than "Sudden Fiction." Conversely, some stories are just marvelous: have no wasted words, tightly woven plots, and compelling characters. These stories are a marvel to see and a must for anyone interested in fiction. It's incredible how much depth is possible in such a short space. If you've ever tried to write this book will impress you with how much the right word is essential. Mark Twain once said "the difference between the right word and almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug." Here is lightning-or is it the bug?-bottled up.

From Hemingway to Jackson, these authors provide evidence that it doesn't take a lot of words to create immense literary impact. These stories are funny, sad, insightful, odd, and cold - in all the best ways.
